Try adding com_maxfps 60

That *might* work, although I doubt it will.

Try this in the console

vid_wait # (0=no wait, 1=wait/vertical sync active, 2= wait/display enable active)

or

_vid_wait_override 1 - if one, forces vertical sync wait in all modes
Lol, are you kidding me? 900+FPS?

were the monsters on crack or something?
There's various things you can try, depending on which Quake engine you're trying to run. But as long as it's using hardware-accelerated graphics (like GLQuake) then the best answer may just be to handle it in the control panel settings for your video card's driver.

For example I know that the NVidia control panel has a place where you can manage the "3D settings" for individual programs. If GLQuake.exe (or whatever you're running) isn't already in the list of programs to manage, you can add it to the list... the control panel lets you use a filebrowser to pick any program that exists on your computer. Once it's in the list you can adjust its individual settings, and you can force it to always use vsync if that's what you want.

(I assume/hope that ATI cards have a similar feature.)
Holy cow, I didn't notice that the original post was from 2012. What is this thread necromancy?
