the versions sold on Steam are a bit hard to get working online, but just install EZQuake and copy the files from the Steam folder (or install one of the community patches that tricks Steam into launching EZQuake instead of the old WinQuake/GLQuake executables, with working Steam overlay, time count and all), and finding servers will be much easier. I think EZQuake even has a built in server browser.

There are loads of servers out there, but I hear that the steam version doesn't work online very well. That can be fixed easily with another client, like Darkplaces, or proquake.
Also, here's a great RQ server: quake.shmack.net (port is 26000)

As for getting a quake 1 disk, I doubt that that will be easy. If someone has an origonal quake one disk, I don't think that they'd want to sell it. I know I woulden't.
Good luck!

because a 'quake one disk' doesn't exist.

Quake CDs exist though

When one owns Quake, they don't "need" nQuake (which is just a convenient license-violating installer as some emergency resurgence for more fodder for the euro highpicmip scene since no one wants to play with them)

hmmm, dont do it, it's just frustrating. quaker (1 and 2, even 3) are just friggin awesome skilled players. there are not many players online, but they are too hard for you/others/me....
they played quake over 10 years......its just frustrating.

play the singleplayer campagn....that roxx also, or in a lan with same skilled n00bs :)
