for everyone who reads this, please copy and paste this discussion around so that steam patches the quake 1 and 2 music. put it on the forums of all your games if you can.

A good virtual CD program would be best, so even if you had the CD you wouldn't have to bother putting it in every time you played.

I kind of wish that they just integrated the music into the game, but the way I had to workaround it was this:

I have some .iso files of some of quake and quake 2 music, and even when I mount it in a virtual CD program, it won't work. Only inserting an actual disc will work.

I also found out how to play the music without having to insert the CD every time. The games check if you have the disc inserted into your drive with the drive letter that is the lowest letter that comes after the drive letter that is for your hard drives, so drive D, if you only have drive C as your hard drive, or Drive E if you have hard drives in drive C and drive D.

What I did, was I have drive E originally as my actual DVD drive, and I have drives F, and G as the virtual drives. I made it so that drive E was a virtual drive, and drive F was the dvd drive. This means that if I do place the actual disc into my dvd drive, music won't play, but if I placed the disc in drive E in my virtual drive, the music will play.

Thanks for the info! I guess it simply looks for the first cd player it can find alphabetically, and assumes that no-one would have multiple cd drives.
