Yep, he has made a full commitment to Occulus Rift. Doom 4 will not be overseen by the guy who invented it.

Well it said it won't affect any current projects. Maybe Doom 4 is better without him though, he tried too hard to push consoles with RAGE and programmed the game around those instead of PC.
Well I think Carmack was losing interest long ago when he founded Armadillo Aerospace and the whole space trip. He's one of those human beings with an exorbitant amount of brain cells that get's bored doing the same old crap from year to year. I think he just got burned out on the whole shooter trip and wanted to do something else. I mean he has more money than God so why not do something new. Occulus Rift could pay him nothing and he'd probably stay on just out of sheer stimulation.

Good for him, now I'm waiting for my VR mask.

I had heard something about that when it first came out, hence the reason why Carmack later apologized for those who had trouble running the game
Carmack didn't leave id, id left Carmack a long time ago.
Seriously. It's not like he helped game design anyway. Last few games have been pretty mediocre from a gameplay standpoint. Visually pleasing, but meh.

that was around doom 3. carmac was the coding genious, not design and story ( Hall had ideas years ahead of his time!)

What??? He created the engines and the assets that dictate what the game will look like and how it will run. He didn't do any artwork or level design but his code was the soul of every id title. That's how he got the nickname, "Graphics God". For a time between 1996-2004 he was the alpha and omega of the hardware industry just because of his tech. Once Tim Sweeny developed the superior Unreal engine though, Carmack's influence began to wane. The titles followed suit with Tim Willits taking over game design and turning out the same old stuff while other developers like Valve and Epic were pushing new boundaries.

They just never grew beyond the corridor shooter. Rage was a real leap for them and we all know how that turned out. Hopefully the Bethesda "takeover" of the development of Doom 4 will save their butts.

last games released was pure garbage (RAGE), who wants to be associated with a company who cannot make a good games in years, even Hard Reset is better then doom 4, and doom 3.
