Calm down man. The game is clearly in alpha state and perhaps that should be more clear but let's just assume that the game is going to get some nice fast updates with the money coming in and all that extra funding will really benefit the game.

Actually the Dev's have come out and said prior to this release that this is pre-alpha / alpha.
Mumbolian May 16, 2013 @ 6:09pm
I have to agree with them, I think it should be changed to that on the store though if they want to get the true credibility for the statement. Everyone knows a beta sells better than an alpha but it doesn't make it a beta.

Eitherway though, I think this game is looking to work out well.

did you miss the Huge blue banner that said early access?

to some people being able to make suggestions to the devs is worth it as well as supporting extra development/more staff hired

It is called a bedrock-beta because that's what the devs promised in the kickstarter.
Bedrock-beta is just the foundation of for the rest of the game. They even sent out a notice that even though it is called the "Bedrock-beta" it is actually a pre-alpha / alpha build - that over time will be developed to the full game.

But the people buying the game on steam aren't the people who got the email saying it is pre-alpha. The game is called "BETA", it should be "bedrock Alpha" at minimum if they want to call it pre-alpha.

Bedrock is in no way a well known phrase to turn the word beta into pre alpha.

Using traditional waterfall methods of production like Alpha/Beta/etc. is difficult because of the state of the game, how constraining the blanket statements are if you don't even follow waterfall internally, and how we're approaching the Bedrock Beta period. If you use the terms literally, Pre-Alpha is before you do any testing and are strictly building features, which does not truly apply to us. Alpha is when features are all generally complete (first pass), and you are beginning to do testing, which does not truly apply to us. And Beta is when assets are generally complete, and you are doing final testing before release, which does not truly apply to us.

We have situations where there are final assets and final systems that need to be tested (Beta), systems that are in their initial stages and need to be expanded a bit more before heavy testing (Alpha), and systems not implemented yet (Pre-Alpha), but we have no blanket statement that covers where we're at. Since the purpose of Bedrock Beta primarily is testing "final" and "near-final" systems as they are implemented and after testing internally, Beta made more sense with this approach than Alpha or Pre-Alpha. From here, we get input from everyone as to what we foresee as final, and whether everyone else sees the same. If not, we can iterate on those particular features until they are stable rather than completing the entire game and begin testing at a point where major changes are near impossible.

That makes sense, I do feel though that if you are doing that then you should have more content in the initial release. Things like being able to pick up creatures, attack with them etc. Just something that has some form of gameplay in and then state that more is coming very soon. As it stands, it is very much an alpha game that has been released with the beta lable over the top of it and I am not suprised that people will pick you up on it.

Either way, you have my full support and I'm hoping to cover this game in depth as it progresses through development and will be posting continual update videos and gameplay videos as more game is added in.

The biggest thing we wanted to show with this initial release is that we're sticking to our guns when it comes to being a spiritual successor. There's been other Dungeon Management games that have come out over the years like Dungeons, Game of Dwarves, and Impire which have channeled classics, but have taken it in a unique and exciting direction. We are looking to build our game using the classics as a foundation and enhance them. So when you go into Bedrock Beta, if you've played the classics, you know exactly what to do. It is rough, as our first build, but we felt this build personified that goal above, and showed what direction we're going. We can only expand from here.

Beta of Alpha is just semantics, either way it's not a release version and that's clear on the store page to anyone that can read.

Beta and Alpha do have specific meanings to game developers, and software developers in general, see wphelps post above (2 above) for what it means. Personally I think that nowerdays many consumers partially understand the difference too, and when they see the word 'beta' they form certain expectations as to the current stage of development of the game. Weather or not the wfto devs feel it is accurate or justified, weather or not they explain it well and people accept it, many many many many people will see beta on the store page, buy based on the store page, and then feel decieved by the current stage of the game. Regardlesss of weather or not they are justified in feeling that way they will feel that way, and they will talk about it, and post about it, and spread it via word of mouth (or the internet equivilent). I feel that wfto will become a good game, and that later in the beta when someone buys into the beta they will feel it is justified in being called a beta by their definition. But I also feel that the devs made a mistake calling it bedrock beta without plastering the words "PRE-ALPHA" all over that store page, preferably in caps, and updating that store page description later on when it meets the public's current expectations of a 'beta', and I feel that they will unfortunately recieve backlash for that mistake.

I love what you're doing and I'm going to be supporting you to the end. But you simply have got to change the store description if you want people to not at least make a passing comment about this beta game being alpha.

You have to understand that calling your game "bedrock" means nothing. Bedrock just sounds like a catchy term and I liked it when I purchased. My first impressions video has gotten quite a bit of praise but it has also had some people say "this game is pre alpha and you're being harsh". Yes, I am being harsh for a pre-alpha, but this is my first impression. I opened a beta game up and got pre-alpha. That is why my points might seem a bit harsh.

I would also like to add that I do praise the game in many aspects also and I think you guys are doing a great job. I just want to bring out honest videos and want to try and avoid my inner fanboyism. It is easy for me to defend any game that is trying to emulate DK2 but I have to turn around in my video and say I like what you're doing but there should be more in it to claim the beta tag.

Everyone knows beta sells more on steam than pre-alpha though.
