I know this is probaly a dumb question, but whenever I look around I start moving backward. Is this regular?

This is due to the old mouse controls also being bound to forward backward movement. You are best off finding a source port, I would recommend zandronum since it has bundled multiplayer, opengl rendering, and other stuff, as well as highly optimized controls.

Plus, you can play brutal doom then
