Why does it do that?

Because the emulator is outdated. Download Zandronum, GZdoom or Zdoom. It's basically the same thing except it has better graphics.

First download the emulators I recommended (only one is necessary, Zandronum has a multiplayer server). Then go to your hard drive/ Program File(x86)/ Steam/ SteamApps/ common/ Doom 2/ base and delete the current emulator titled "dosbox". Paste your new emulator (rename it to "dosbox") and any necessary application extensions that came with the emulator. That's about all.

However if you do want to keep your emulator, go to the /base folder. You will see two .CONF files titled "doom2" and "doom2m". Open both with notepad (at the same time if you want). And change "fullscreen", "fulldouble" and "waitonerror" from "true" to "false". Save and close them. Then open the dosbox.CONF file with notepad also. Change "waitonerror" from "true" to "false". Save and close. That's about it.

I reommend doing the bottom one first and finish the first level. Then do the top one and do the same level again. You will see a massive difference in graphics quality.
