How I understood this game (spoiler alert)

First off, I really enjoy this game. I don't know why but I do. My friends see me play it and ask why I've played so much of it because its just confusing, what's the story. So what I like to tell them is that you play a character in purgatory.
Your character had a passionate relationship when they were alive that slowly went sour - to the point where the characters couldn't stand each other and just wanted the other to die. Then one day your character picks up a gun and ends their lover's life before ending their own. Now they have to spend eternity reliving this relationship over and over again.
By this time my friends are giving me weird looks and insisting I need to leave my house for a bit.
