What a ripoff
Doom, Doom II and Final Doom don't come with all of the original files.. No setup.exe means no way to changing the crappy, nasty mono PCM music to MIDI... I can't play them like I remember them, with General MIDI soundtracks!

Heretic and Hexen have the setup file, dammit!

You can use a source port instead of DOSbox and that way you'll have the music as you want.

All of the source ports use SDL_mixer, which is horribly bugged with MIDI.

Ah cool, thanks! That worked, and even made it sound like it was on the AWE32 I had... Which is loads better than the SDL_Mixer did with the source ports.

I never listened to the music on MIDI. It's a lot scarier than the original... this music was released with DOOM95 right? I always played the DOS version back in '94 and have been playing the same since, and used sourceports only for mods. Gonna have to replay again with the MIDI music now.

The original game had the MIDI music, you just had to have an audio card that could play it.. My first PC was a Pentium 90 with a Soundblaster AWE 32 card and DOS 6.22. I think Doom was one of the first games to directly support it. So I never played it with the non-MIDI.

Actually the original game used the MUS music format developed by id software. It is similar to midi but has a few more limitations. Later versions of the original Doom added MIDI support for pwads.

Modern source ports do not support MUS directly since that would require the creation of an entire library, so there is instead a simple library that converts MUS files to MIDI files within the .exe called "MUS2MIDI"

Yeah, MIDI music came with d DOOM95 version I think.

Correcting my statement, I think Doom was the first game to support the SB AWE32 General MIDI natively. MUS or MIDI, today's Doom source ports seem to be able to reproduce them with the proper programs (like BassMIDI) from the original WADs, even though they have a hell of a bug with SDL_Mixer.
