Poor graphics/ bad controls
I had the BFG addition, and was pleased with the graphics/ controls on the original doom games. Also had Doom2 for windows 95 back in the day. Just bought Final Doom and the graphics are ♥♥♥♥ poor. Is there a way for me to change this?

In what way are they poor? They should look the same as doom or doom2. Try a source port like PrBoom+ (or GLBoom which comes with it for opengl), or ZDaemon, or GZDoom. Search for hi-res textures too, there are some projects knocking around.

I ended up using Chocolate Doom. It plays pretty well + I can set my own key bindings. PT and TNTE were choppy and blurry unlike all of the other original copies of WADs I played. Audio was horrible - sounded like pong noises.

That's very odd. The original TNT and Plutonia IWADS look and sound exactly like doom2, except with new textures. There should be no choppiness or blur, given that this game uses a gloriously pixelated software renderer... Were you using dosbox (through steam) to play?

I downloaded dos .74 which was apparently better than the .70 version that was in the game. No improvement though.

OK, so chocolate doom fixes the sound/graphics issue?

Works fine for me. Thanks for your correspondence.

Im guessing they look 'worse' now because we are all using monitors with many, many more pixels that old hardware. For instance, our old PS2 and N64 games looked better on CRT TVs. Thats because they were designed for those displays, not high def monitors of today.

I find running older titles such as this in a window improve their appearance.

Yeah, if you go to windowed mode you'll see the game is actually a tiny square and you could fit like 100 of it on your screen... Is there any way to use mouse to look around but not move you forward/backward? Not sure how the classic games are in BFG

I used Chocolate Doom, which allows you to program all the controls to your desire. You can set any key to do any task, and you can decide what your mouse is responsible for doing (looking left and right.)

This Is Easy do.

Step One

Try to Find the files "TNT.Wad" and "PLUTONIA.WAD". They are on (C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Final Doom\base\).

Step Two
Then download on internet Gzdoom. is easy to find. and Extract where you want.

Step tree

Copy the "TNT.wad" and "PlUTONIA.Wad" on the same Folder. exec Gzdoom.exe

Have fun!

Play it with Zandronum.
End of discussion.

I use the Doomsday Engine with a few add-ons and it works very nicely. With the mods I use it more or less brings graphics up to Quake III level. More importantly, it gives the option to disable auto-aim, has mouse support and a cross-hair.

Zandronum is all you need. The server browser will download all mods you need. You can play a enhanced single player game too. http://zandronum.com/
