New to this game, question about multiplayer

I'm sure this has been asked before but I'm looking for specifics...

Do I have to pay to play online because of GFWL? I ask because all game modes say "Unable to locate session". Is it just because no one plays this game online? Or do I have to be part of a group or something to see servers?

Well, yeah. GFWL is a load of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but don't let it ruin the experience from this awesome game.

the only time you pay is when you buy the game and multiplayer is free but it's better to use dedicated session searching it's below the one where you make your own server here can you see all the servers that are up and running and how many that are into them because when you use the function Join Capital example it's takes only servers launched close to you for better connection so use the dedicated search and you will find a lot of servers

GFWL is unnecessary when it's on Steam but what can you do?

at least you disable voice chat in GFWL and use Steam chat if you wish....

And i STRONGLY reccommend that you beat the Campaign on Elite, or Ace mode, then you'll have a light feel for how Multiplayer is. DFM isn't gonna help if you're bad at the game. Practice hard and often. Always vary your planes, or your opponents will exploit the plane's weaknesses.

As long as I don't have to pay, it shouldn't be a problem for me. Although I certainly dislike having two DRMs to log into. Anyway, I've already beaten Elite mode, and I plan to A-rank the free missions and unlocking most of the skills before tackling online. I've played almost every Ace Combat game and this game is quite fun, although the lack of superweapons in the campaign like Excalibur, Stonehenge, etc is a little disappointing... Either way, I look forward to flying with you guys.

Also, is it just me or is the Nosferatu badly glitched? Sometimes after I kill a plane in DFM, my plane just sort of... plummets to the ground belly first.

I think it's just you. I've never had that problem, personally.

That's one of my problems with the multiplayer. Too many overrate their skills, and use the Fishbed, which just makes it too easy for me. Why not use a good plane, like the Raptor?

wrong all planes in the game is good it's just how you use it i use the F-16B all the time and the raptor goes down like ♥♥♥♥ when i'm behind it. so you need to come up with something better than that

One more thing... How do I perform DFM/ASM support? The screen says to push a controller dpad-looking button, but I have no idea what that is. It shows that when I use both the keyboard and a controller (I use the Nyko AIRFLO).

Yes, i know. Still, it has a bigger weapons capacity, more agile, and faster. That's what i'm saying.

It is sarcasm, but i still do not know how.
