I love Dragon Age, Just Got BGEE
Hi all -

So, I must have played Dragon Age like 4 times without beating it. Each time, I would get incredibly far and something would happen to my game. First time was on console, must have put 30 hours in it when I realized that I really screwed up my units with their skill points. Got it for PC. Played it, got caught up with life and just recently, started playing it again for PC. My Fourth Run. Love the game.

ANY WHO, I hear BG is like DA. I grew up wtih the NES, SNES and PS1. I find the graphics charming. That being said, I like to play as a Rogue with daggers that crits a lot. But I don't know D&D rules and I know this game can be very unforgiving.

I hear fighter/thief is good, and I see classes like Shadowdancer that seem cool and I just need some advice. I know thieves/rogues are usually weak to start with, but I'm OK with that.

So, yea, I like to dual wield daggers. And deal a high amount of damage in short time. I prefer to dodge than wear heavy armor. Move fast vs move slow. All that jazz. Can anyone give me advice that's played a similar way?

Thanks!

If you go fighter/thief you will be able to dual wield, but a lot of your combat time will be spent out of the shadows, at least until BG2, where you can save a lot of invisibility potions and items with invisibility per day (both of which are more susceptible to debuff spells than normal hide/move silently combined with the cloak of non detection). I think only your main hand weapon does damage when backstabbing.

As a shadow dancer you might have trouble dual wielding, but it is possible the hiding bonus will offset your poor thaco and thaco penalties. Still, you would have much better thaco using one 1-handed weapon or 2-handed weapon (staff). I think the shadowdancer has lower backstab multipliers than normal thieves, but being able to rehide to avoid attacks and move to other targets for more backstabs is a big advantage.

Thanks for the response. Shadow sounds pretty cool the way you described it. I like the whole rehide and appear tactic.

I am a huge DAorigins fan , and my fav character is my rogue wielding two swords :) :)
Baldurs Gate is very different, but when you get the hang of it, my guess is you will love this too :)
If you are going to play a thief, let me suggest that you start out as human fighter, and dual class to thief at level 5. When you change into a new class, you will loose your first abilities until your new class is one level higher than your first one, - in this case thief level 6. This way you will be able to become a fully developed thief with decent fighter skills :)
BGEE is a more difficult game to play, so with your first playthrough you should maybe choose a tough character. Try to give your character 18 in strenght, dexterity and constitution.

ranger/theif is also an option for a dualwielding munchkin, or Ranger - thief dualclass.
If you want to do the long view class build then you should actually play a fighter class (ranger or fighter) all through BG 1 and then continue in BG 2 up till level 11 when your HP bonus for fighter class stops being a huge advantage and THEN dualclassing.

If you want your dualwielder right now, then multiclass (fighter/thief or ranger/thief) is the best way to go if you also want to be able to go toe to toe with the toughest fighters and withstand a hit or two from fireballs (they hurt!)

When you choose your thiefclass btw, choose the trapmaster, unlike all other classes who has a hell of a time taking down bosses immune to timestop in BG 2, thieves just stealth in before the battle begins, lay 20+ traps which does up to 30 HP dmg each right infront of the boss and then goes back to the rest fo the party, and THEN engage the bossfight :D
Boss down in 2 secs max :D

There is no point to being a dual wielding shadowdancer. You don't attack with two weapons at once (meaning your backstab will be as if one weapon was attacking) and you lose a lot of thac0 for only having 1 point in proficiency with the class. You also can't get specialisation in any weapon without dual classing to a fighter.

I'd just go with a fighter/thief. Its a safe class that gets stronger with levels.

I took a dwarven defender through the game basically to refresh my memory about how the game plays and because I know how tough they can be to kill from playing Neverwinter Nights. I am now looking at going through with a bounty hunter thief and a shape changer druid.

I hope to be able to get BG2 working soon as well because I have never finished it either mainly due to my PC's giving up the ghost half way through a play through. And new games coming out.

Just got to figure out how to get round the message that stops me from playing the game. It says I have no space on my HDD yet I have 3TB of space. This is a problem with the installer and I will either need to partition the drive or find a smaller one to use.
