I didn't know that some BG! chars you could actually import 1:1 to BG1EE. Nice.
Regarding the other chars you have problems with, you can look here for a post about someone who got it to work by altering a value in the save game via a Hex editor.
Windows version is not the issue. You're good there.
I know Julius had a link with solutions concerning custom portraits, I can't find it right now. But according to most people who found a solution they say it's either the naming convention or the size, or even just re-saving it worked for them.
Have a look here[forums.beamdog.com] for some starting points.
