What you should know before you purchase this game
Gamersgate sells the D&D Anthology (Baldur's gate 1+2 and all exansions; Icewind dale 1+2 and all expansions; and 2 other old school RPGs) for $20. These are the original games, and DRM free: http://www.gamersgate.com/DDB-DBAMC/dungeons-and-dragons-anthology-the-master-collection

But, you say, you're missing out on all the "Enhanced" content. The "Enhanced" content provided in this "Ehanced Edition" of Baldur's gate is available with several mods originally created for the original BGs. That is to say, "Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition" is essentially a compilation of preexisting mods already freely available to the Internet.

So, what are those mods?

1) There are two main conversion mods that string BG1 and BG2 together, and also run BG1 on the BG2 engine: Baldur's Gate Trilogy (BGT) and EasyTutu. Google these for more information, you have to use one or the other.

2) There's a "Lost Items" rebalancing mod I think is also essential. Since you're now playing BG1 on the BG2 engine, what happens if you pick "katana" as your weapon of choice at the start of BG1? There's no katanas throughout all of the original BG1, so you'd be up a creek with no... katana. This mod addresses this issue. It inserts BG2-specific items throughout the game (in a balanced way) so that you can play BG1 under a BG2 style character. It ALSO inserts other items that were very sparse (eg, axes) in the stock BG1 and BG2. http://www.shsforums.net/topic/16160-vedrans-lost-items/

3) Next, there's a display resolution fix called "G3: Widescreen Mod". The original BGs were restricted in their max resolutions. This mod increases the playable resolutions, including widescreens. http://www.gibberlings3.net/widescreen/

Those 3 mods are pretty much what this enhanced edition is (in fact, from what I've read it doesn't even have the "lost items" mod). Maybe there's some new cutscenes if you're into that. I just wanted to put this up here to help people make informed decisions. I'd also like to point out there are a TON of other mods of BGT and EasyTutu available out there.

Great info that everyone should know.

Thanks you for this, not to mention that there are numerous bugs introduced in the enhanced edition that did not exist in the original game.

If you don't like the new BG:EE, fine, don't buy it, but you guys are gonna miss out on the BG2:EE release since your installments of the game won't be compatible. Who knows, maybe they'll release BG3 on the same engine and you won't be able to play that either. (I Will!)

Yeah, OR... Not buy it now and when / IF BG2:EE is released, then this one will be put down on sale at $5.99 and people will then pick it up feeling that it's appropriately priced for what they've "enhanced" in it. Then when they're done with this one, BG2:EE will also be put down on sale and they'll pick that one up too and play it. All in all saving themselves about $30.00 over what you'll have paid.

IMHO, Releasing a BG3 on this engine would be tantamount to developer/publisher suicide.

I'd probably pay close to 100 dollars for this either way. I brought the box set a while ago from a game store for around 50 dollars.

Any thing to give the gaming companies a little help. Not saying they're poor, but times are tough and it would be good to have a decent line of games released.

I will admite I was dissapointed by BG EE, i was actually expecting them to put a little more effort and add more traditional D&D elememnts. However while what you said is true i decided to buy this game just to support the makers. They provided so much just by making the original BG i felt i should at least make a small contribution to the greatness they gave me as a child

You know, its more than just a compliation of mods, don't you?

1th Link
It literally a list of mods they included.

2th Link
It again literally a list of mods they included.

3th Link
It's a list of thinks that changed between BG1 und BG1EE
Most of them are part of mods.

Yes there is new stuff but the problem is.
The new stuff is buggy as hell. It's more buggy than unhatched BG1.

4th Link
It's a patchlog ... they released a very buggy game an now the patch it.
Yes it's more than a compilation of mods. But that's because Modded BG is less buggy.

I think the best thing ablaut BGEE that they ditched ddraw and fixed OpenGL.
A modernized IEngine awesome. Something the mod community could use.

But as it stands now. It's an overpriced very buggy version of BG1 with build in mods.

I bought the D&D Anthology on Gamer's Gate last year when it was on sale for $7. Awesome deal.

I also bought BGEE on Steam for $20 and it was worth every dime. I plan to buy BG2EE at whatever price they plan to charge when it comes out, and I'll rebuy them all again if they ever release the Anthology on Steam.

You can never own too many copies of BG.

I was one of the people who tried to run BG1 with mods and it didn't like my 64 bit OS (win 7). The same system ran BG:EE just fine. I haven't seen all the bugs others have seen, so I find the game aqppropriartely prices, bug-free version of BG1 with mods.

If you do wish to buy BG:EE I strongly recommend you buy at beamdog and not here on stream. I have found that my steam edition has file structure and directory differences that has resulted in some mods that are reported towork for the Beamdog version, not working for me.

The Steam version is also about 2 weeks behind the Beamdog version when it comes to patches due to the Atari having to modify and pass on the updates.

I'm running the GOG versions of BG1 and BG2 on Windows 7 64bit flawlessly. Works fantastic and I'm happy to finally play these games. I've also got a separate installation of the GOG BG1+BG2 using the mod instructions on the GOG website to add high res support, combine the two games into one, etc. and that works very well also.

i haven't found a single bug since the patch, and feel free to glance at my time played.

i think you people griping about bugs just have issues with your computer.
