Old (original) Baldurs Gate save files
Hello guys,

I'm a bit confused about the information found over the internet about old save game files. There are sites, saying old save games will work, there are sites saying they wont. Can anyone give me a definite answer?

I played around 50 hours on my old, original, Baldur's Gate (with a small monitor), now on my 27' screen the original resolution hurts my eyes and the widescreen mod is just awful, so BG:EE would be just perfect for me now, but if I can't continue playing my old game it's a no go for me.

Thank you all in advance!

Ouf, I thought it was an easy question with an easy (and fast answer) :-)

Again, here (igxpro.com) there is such an info:

When asked via Twitter about whether or not the new enhanced version of Baldur’s Gate would be compatible with player’s old save files, Beamdog developer Trent Oster responded, “We haven’t changed the save game formats yet. Hopefully nothing comes up that forces that on us.”

On the other hand, there is a post on the official site:

At first there was hope too, but as of now there is almost zero chance. The developers have commented that so much about the game has changed, that importing saves will likely not be possible.

So anyone here, who could confirm any of these statements?

i've imported multiplayer saves from original BG+expansion
looks ok, haven't checked all inventory and stats though
1. locate original saves (in game directory)
2. locate save folder for EE (on my system (XP SP2) it was: "%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition\")
3. copy saves to appropriate sub-directory (e.g. "mpsave" for multiplayer)
4. edit Baldur.gam for each save with hex-editor and change GAMEV1.1 to GAMEV2.0 (it's at 0 offset)

Sounds like apples and oranges. You've got an article that seems to be reporting on rumors of then future events and a direct statement from a dev saying that they should work. I know which one I'd believe. However, if you've still got your saved games then surely you've still got the game? If so I wouldn't waste time with this. It's really not an improvement over what is available in the mod community.

Why apples and oranges? There are both kind of official statements regarding one and the same problem. And again, you're not contributing to solving this problem, just the 1000th time "play the original if you got original saves".

I do think the EE is an improvement, and because it was recently on sale I bought it additional to my GoG.com-version. For example I do prefer the EE over the widescreen mod because the widescreen looks awfull as hell, a lot of mods require BG2 to run which I yet do not own...

THANKS A BUNCH mate! This really made my save files work with the EE. As far as I see there are no issues with my 50+ hours save files from the original BG1. It's freaking awesome! Like discovering a whole new game :) A bonus for me is that my original BG1 is from gog.com, thus, in english and the EE is in german, now I have english voices (which are far more superior compared to german ones) and german text (which is sometimes okay to understand the depth).

I just tried this and I immediately noticed a problem. All the weapon skills are zero when you transfer old save games from the original BG to BG:EE. The system had changed from BG1 to BG2, and the BG1:EE uses the BG2 weapon point system. I haven't tried this with BG2. Hopefully BG2 will transfer to BG2:EE since they use the same system.

Many many thanks! This message helped me a lot!
And I did not found the weapons skills problem mentioned by Shteg, guess I was lucky!
Again, thanks a bunch mate!

Importing from Baldurs Gate TSC tutu to Enhanced Editions (single player):

The save-games seem not to be directly compatible.
Even with the already existing GAMEV2.0 entry.
It's not possible to continue with my adventurers group
on the map I left them in tutu. Directly loading them crashes the game.

With the above described way to copy savefolders I can only import my BGtutu
characters to the start of BG:EE and the Final-Saves to the beginning BG2:EE.
They lose their gear, money, reputation but keep their XP, spells and proficiencies.

The save-games from BG2 can be loaded in BG2:EE without problems.
