Some things I've learned on my latest runthrough
Playing as a Blackguard with the plan for an evil/neutral party, aiming to balance reputation around 6.

1. It is possible to critical hit with a quarterstaff and deal so much damage that a cutthroat will explode into ludicrous gibs. It is also very very AWESOME when this happens, and I can only imagine the terror of any poor monk who walks in and sees the mess.

2. Hull is an ass. Hull also has plate mail. Hull is also far enough away from everyone that you can murder him and not get the guards on your butt. Thank you for your generous donation, Hull. By the way, you got blood on my new platemail. I'll forgive you though.

Yeah, I had a friend show me a picture of him performing a backstab that dealt 4k damage with a quarterstaff.

i've learned that chars with 9 intelligence or lower are basically illiterate. i always thought that they can't use certain items because of some other reasons... like, maybe they have inborn focusing issues, or had traumas, or are too straight-thinking (gimme that wand, i'm gonna put out their eyes with it!) in general...? intelligence is directly related to education, apparently...

I would posit that intelligence is the ability to learn and understand information. 9 or less intelligence means that you're incapable of learning how to read - it's too complicated for you. A massively high intelligence means that you're a fast learner, capable of learning anything you put your mind to. 0 intelligence means you've become a vegetable.

Conversely, wisdom is your ability to understand esoteric concepts like the divine, parables, morality, and whether tomato belongs in a fruit salad or not. A good character with high wisdom understands good and evil and whether the greater good is worth the immediate evil. An evil character with high wisdom understands the difference between furthering his own malicious cause and simply being evulz. 0 wisdom means you understand nothing, and as such, have become nothing.

And Charisma is your ability to relate to other people, your confidence in yourself, and what drives other people. 0 Charisma means your psyche has collapsed - you are worthless completely, and your mind kills itself out of soul-crushing depression.

At least in my opinion.

i can not disagree with this. but... why not 6 or 7 intelligence? why 9? it's hard to believe that every single char with 9 intelligence and despite their wisdom and charisma can't read. i mean... chars with 10 intelligence can read... are they just a little bit smarter than those who can not learn how to read at all?

also, are there any other... interesting but not obvious disadvantages or advantages in d&d (any rules) based on stats? for example, regeneration with 20 constitution... maybe fighters with 25 strength can wield 2 2-handed swords?

it's hard to find something without having the keywords... :]

I agree that it's a really arbitrary (and arbitrarily high) number.
