Skele skulls... did I mess up?

I killed a bunch of skeletons and got like 10+ skeleton skulls, which I sold to the wizard in High Hedge. Later I found a chicken that is the apprentice to the wizard I sold the skulls to, and the wizard said I need a skull so he can un-polymorph his apprentice.

Since then, none of the skeletons drop skulls (killed maybe 30 of them), and I can't buy them back from the wizard because I don't get the option to shop, only the saying 'bring me a skull'.

Did I mess up this quest, and am unable to complete it because of this? I'm not interested to know where I get the skull if I still can, just if I can still get a skull as a drop or from another merchant. I'd really like some of the gear that wizard sells, now that I have some gold.

I've never had them stop dropping so you should be fine.

No, you didn't mess up the quest.
Yes, you can get more skulls.

Make sure you save before handing it in, it's a 50/50 shot whether he gets changed or die to failure.

Killed about 100-200 skeletons now, and ZERO skulls.

Ever since that quest started (bring the wizard a skull), they have stopped dropping. Was hoping the skeles in Durtags Tower would drop them, but nope. Thought maybe only the outside skeletons and random encounter skeletons wouldn't drop them, but none of them do, in dungeons or elsewhere.

Guess this is a bug; sucks, wanted that gear.

Seems to be a bug known since 2014 or before,

but once again nothing found in the new bug tracker. It likely has not been entered there, or if it had been in a private tracker, it has not been copied and made a public ticket.

In a very few places, skulls are found in chests, but I don't know whether and where in BG1.
