When 2 heros in same army XP is divided keep them apart, then when you start getting +Training bring them back together.
Start whacking the peon troops it sends you. If you get lucky, it should send in troops weaker than the stronger monsters out there, and they should get slightly stronger over time from AI Tech research.
The secret is to keep your units alive of course. The AI doesn't do the best job of using world spells to its advantage. You can fight stronger monsters after damaging them with Map Spells that make them immobile, -attack, etc, etc.
Anyway, playing Whack-A-Mole with just one AI who isn't all-powerful yet can also cause that same AI to fall behind and eventually you should be able to take their capital. The secondary goal is, of course, to stop them from settling near lairs with epic monsters who will come targetting you once free.
Have your heroes specialize rather than being jack-of-all-trades. Splitting level-up ability choices between magic and warrior skills isn't that great until you've leveled up a lot, for instance, and are already pretty viable.
Farming quest scrolls will get you XP, as well as items and spells you simply can't get outside of quests.
Here is what I do...
My sovereign is the only hero I use for combat for a long, long, long time. Because my sovereign is the only hero I use for combat, he/she gets all the XP and levels up fast enough to handle any challenge in the game. All of my other early game heroes I use as city admins to help lower unrest, and when possible I trade their gear to upgrade my sovereign.
Eventually when I have researched better armor and weapons, I upgrade the gear of my low level heroes and place them with a strong army group. Finally they are ready to lead from behind in a fight, but I let my units do all the combat until my noob heroes gain some more levels. This late in a game they will be fighting strong monsters that give lots of XP when killed, or some other faction's units, so just a few fights and the noob heroes level up pretty fast.
There's not usually a need to rush your noob heroes into higher levels. Besides, with my method, I usually recruit some higher level heroes before I have even leveled up my noob heroes. Sometimes my noob low level heroes never level up and just remain as city admins, and thats ok.
i want to ask something else, i must of my games i meet pc army that have high armor and allways my weapons no strong enough..
what is the highest damage army can do per soldier? know my army damage is 11X4 my damage to other army is like 0-1... its end with 3-4 damage.
i know you can soldiers with traits that up the damage, you can add more strong weapon(i know there is 3 class of weapons), does the level help them hit more hard?
my soldeir never do good damage agains heavy armors, this include use of spears...
the LEVEL of the unit makes a HUGE difference in how strong it is. that might be what is happening if your units are new and low level compared to your opponent's army. it also helps to surround the enemy units, so your attacks get a SWARM bonus to damage.
are you making custom units for your faction? the default units are pretty weak. in the mid and late game after you researched some good weapon and armor upgrades you should make new units with the new technology.
also, are you upgrading your units' weapons and armor? even some of the default units can be strongly upgraded, but it requires LOTS of resources, especially for armor upgrades.
i do custom units allways traits is +3 hp,25% for damaged units and # vs lower levels, i allways upgrade my current units but i lost them here and there that way they not so high level..
