Challenging difficulty seems to be the best.
I'm not really a fan of giving enemies an economic advantage, so higher than Challenging is kindof like cheating for the enemies.

Lower than challenging difficlty and the enemies artificial intelligence is gimped to a level of an idiot.

Challenging seems to be about right.

I'm assuming noone here plays on less than challenging, right?

Also, Epic pacing and default other settings (aside from difficulty) seems to make for the most balanced and rewarding matches.

Easy is boring as hell, AI is practically ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Playing on higher difficulties is the best of course. Trying to survive is fun, i usually play turtle style and fortify my cities and create bottle necks with certain map terrain,,,,just my 2 cents.

Challenging is the way to go, though I always fall back on Normal after a break from the game, or if I'm trying out a faction I'm not so familiar with (eg Yithril or Gilden).

Epic pacing on Challenging is actually really good. Everythings a bit more balanced. You have time to fight with armies that aren't fully upgraded. If you play on the largest size random maps, starting FFA with all other standard settings.. difficulty challenging, pacing epic, its just great.

Can take a couple of weeks to finish, and can actually be pretty epic.

My last one was 10 player FFA on the largest random map, challenging difficulty, epic pacing. It lasted a little over a week (i played a lot though), near the end of the match, after about 1500 turns, the FFA had turned into several alliances battling it out with dragons and devastating spells. Good ♥♥♥♥.
