It's difficult to know where to begin when reviewing DOOM. For our generation, it's the equivalent of being handed the Bible and asked to give it a score out of ten..... The content isn't so much the important issue here, rather it's the legacy the game left behind.
I don't think many people would argue that gaming (especially PC gaming) could be divided into "Before DOOM" and "After DOOM". No, it wasn't the first to do many of the tricks we now take for granted. No, it wasn't the best FPS around. But.... the iPod wasn't the first portable music player and certainly wasn't the best, but it changed the way we listen to music forever. DOOM did the same thing for the FPS, and that's not an exaggeration.
You only have to look at the timeline of games development to see that it changed both the industry and people's attitudes. Suddenly, corporate networks were being clogged up with data from employees fragging each other when they should have been working. People at home were able to design their own levels and have others play them. The graphic violence drew criticism from various groups and DOOM was talked about in national media. Every games developer in the world was rushing their own FPS to market to try and cream off some of the publicity DOOM was generating. Some were successful (Duke Nukem 3D), some (Nitemare 3D?) less so.
No, it wasn't the first to do any of these things. But at the time it was nothing short of a phenomenon. There was barely a console around which didn't receive some version of DOOM at some point (Even the VIC-20 got one eventually thanks to homebrew).
Is it the best game ever? No. But it's very important if you're even slightly interested in games, and you owe it to yourself to at least play it. The industry was never the same again after DOOM. It kick-started the interest in LAN gaming, and made 3D gaming if not the standard, then at least a target to aspire to.
iD of course managed to make lightning strike twice when Quake was released, but that's another story...
