Old Doom games working on windows 8?
I'm shopping for birthday presents for my mom and she's a big fan of the old doom/ quake/ unreal franchises. I'm just wondering if all those old games will work on her pc which runs windows 8 through Steam. Help would be very nice!

For me they don't, the game loads up but freezes. I don't have any other Windows 8 systems to test on though, hopefully someone else has tried.

I still play them using modern ports, I replace the game files with some newer ones, I wrote a guide on how to do it if you don't mind spending 15 minutes setting it up.

Well, I may since she loves her Doom and other 80s/90s fps's. Can you send me a link to the guide please?

Keep in mind that's just for running it through Steam. If she doesn't care about that then you can simply download a port and follow its instructions.

If she wants Doom to look and run how it used to then Chocolate Doom is a really good port, if she wants widescreen and smoother framerate then GZDoom is a good port.

Dosbox games dont work well on modern PCs, so the only way to run doom these days is by using a source port. i would recommend using either GZDoom or Zandronum to run doom. as for running doom through steam, use the guide that '[SAND] KING LIZARDS EAT TOAST' mentioned.
