[HOW TO] Brutal Doom
Ok, so you want to play doom/doom2/finaldoom etc. and you've heared
about the awesome mod called Brutal Doom?

Well here's how to install and play the mod.

First off, you need to get a sourceport engine like GZDoom, you can get it here:
http://www.osnanet.de/c.oelckers/gzdoom/download.html

After you have installed GZDoom it should find the "doom.wad" automaticly or else you have to set that up in the options (make sure you have installed doom first ofc or else GZDoom will never detect it)

Secondly, download the latest version of Brutal Doom, you can get it here:
http://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom/downloads

Place the "brutal doom.pk3" file on the desktop near the "GZ Doom shortcut", when you are going to play you just drag the *.pk3 file onto the gzdoom shortcut and it will load automaticly.

If you are looking to enhance the experience even more, you can also get the Doom Metal pack from the same page as brutal doom, and heres how to install that:
in the GZDoom folder you need to create a new folder and name it "skins" and in skins is where you put the "DoomMetalVol4.wad" file.
should look like this:
c:/games/GZdoom/Skins/DoomMetalVol4.wad

And the next time you load brutal doom the music will load automaticly.

And thats it, hope this helped.

Doom 2 is DEFINATELY the better bet, considering mods. 80% of mods past and current are for doom 2, so being without it limited your content greatly (mission packs, gameplay mods, other stuf..which is all free)

Doom and Doom 2 shares data, so you can play a Doom 2 mod on Doom if it is not releated to new stuff that doesn't exist in DM1.

Actually, this is not true, many, many, many, MANY mods require doom 2, both for the level format, additional features, monsters, textures, AND because some mods LITERALLY request doom 2. And the "related" stuff is a huge amount of stuff, the ssg, revenants, nazis, mancubus, hell knights, archviles, aracnatrons, pain elementals, zombie commandos, and any / ALL props not included in doom 1. That huge amount of stuff disqualifies MOST mods / map packs from use to their entirety.

Not to mention 95% of servers online with mods run doom 2 over doom 1.

Please try not to spead disinformation.

I think he meant it the other way around, some content will easily work on DOOM II if it was made for DOOM (1).

This all said, I'll try and integrate Brutal Doom into the launcher I'm working on for the 20th Birthday of Doom.

I installed GZdoom but idk wat to do after that...i already have doom installed and it did not automatically detect
The Killer 30 nov 2013 om 2:18vm
So, when you click the "gzdoom.exe" it doesn't pop up a window listing all doom.wad's currently on your computer?
You can try copy-paste the doom.wad into the GZdoom folder to ease it's detection.

you can read on more solutions on this forum post:
http://www.doomworld.com/vb/source-ports/60306-adding-wads-to-zdoom-or-gzdoom/

worst case is reinstalling GZdoom, but i doubt that takes a long time.

oh ok yea but idk wat to do when that menu pops up?
The Killer 30 nov 2013 om 4:30vm
When you double click the *.exe, and the menu pops up, you can see all the *.wad files that GZDoom has found on your computer, as i have my GZDoom open when i write this message i can see:

DOOM 2: Hell on Earth (doom2.wad)
Final Doom: Plutonia Experiment (plutonia.wad)
Final Doom: TNT - Evilution (tnt.wad)
The Ultimate DOOM (doom.wad)

And what i do, when to play either of them, is to click on the wad i want to play and then i click "OK" down at the bottom and the game starts.
WARPIGEON 30 nov 2013 om 5:02vm
oh ok i see so just extract the brutal19.pk3 into that .exe for GZDoom and it should run it?
The Killer 30 nov 2013 om 5:08vm
you drag the pk3 file over the exe and it vill load automaticly then you choose which game you want to play brutal doom with
