The Ultimate DOOM

The Ultimate DOOM

I am ready for one of the best games in existance.
Despite this game's historical value to the gaming industry and being all around AWESOME, I've yet to play it properly. I played it first as a youngling on GBA (which compared to what I've seen of the original, suffered from being ported) and I tried to emulate it with....terrible results.

I'm ready to fix this mistake, what would be the best way to experince this? Buy it here? Get a sourceport? If so which one? Keyboard/Mouse or gamepad?

I was reading a review of the GBA port a couple of days ago, it seemed pretty bad.

GZDoom seems to be the best source port for single player.
If you can wait till quakecon the games will be 75% off, they are currectly 50% off. Or there is always the bay.

How vanilla do you want your experience to be? I usually run a modified brutal doom, modified textures and a HUD mod.

Keyboard and mouse.

Only the gameplay needs to be vanilla. Textures, sounds, and everything else is up for change (within reason, I'm not interested in playing a retexured game in which I play as an elf on a journery to kill his fat slavemaster)

My way is like this:

Source Port: Zandronum (I also used Skulltag, Doomsday and ZDoom before)
Mouse and Keyboard: Yes, with mouselook.
Custom WADSs (when you are bored of default levels): A bunch like Hell Revealed, Community Chests, 1Monster and Congestion1024.
after discovering ZDoom for the very first time yesterday and tested out some of the gameplay, i'm now going with that instead of the DOSBox version. At least I get not only mouselook, but both the ability to crouch-down and jump too.

Gamepad is nice if you want to play like the original. Controls are the same configuration as PSX version of DOOM/Final Doom but i recommend Mouse/Keyboard. And yeah, You should definely use a Source port! I recommend GZDoom and Risen 3d
Have fun fragging Demons mate! =D

Got this set up for a while now. I got ZDL so I can switch between mods, so after getting through a fair bit of vanilla I tried a few mods (like brutal doom) It was good fun =)

Detailed directions on how to run GZDoom and Brutal Doom in the video description. Only thing to note is, if you're playing properly installed Doom, like, installed through Steam, then GZDoom would automatically detect the game files and lets you choose which game to play.

Contrary to the popular opinion of Brutal Doom, I hardly ever play with it, and to be honest don't think it's that amazing.

I usually play on Zandronum (even though it's dedicated to multi-player) with vanilla controls and textures. I do not use mouselook or crouching/jumping.
For music I use a Roland SC-55 soundfont that pretty much emulates how Doom sounded on said sound card almost to a T. With the release of the SC-55 soundtrack a few days ago, I'll probably start playing with that more.

In terms of mods, I only ever play with one, blink.wad, which makes the status bar face blink between looks. It makes the doomguys face just look better imo.

Some wads I play are 1Monster, DoomTheWayidDid, Doom:ONE,Revenge of the 90's!, Hell Revealed, and Plutonia 2.
