DOOM (1993)

Visual bug
I've enjoyed playing this game a lot and I've had it on steam for over a year now but recently Its developed a wired glitch. Every time I load the game now within two minutes the colours freak out - sometimes just the info bar is normal and the rest of the images look like the colours have gone negative, or everything has gone psychedelic and there are random areas of lighting that keep their original look even with rainbow ghoulies running through them. What could have set this off? Is there anything I can do about this? (Doom 2 and all my other games still work fine)

I don't know how to fix this, but I think it's something to do with the "COLORMAP" in the WAD.

I would suggest you using a source port. GZDoom, Zandronum, or Doomsday. (You can do Zdoom but that sometimes does that color glitch on my computer)

Look in the guides to find them.

I have the same problem, except it does it in the Main Menu. I haven't even started and it's freaking out. I'm going to try what Logan303 says. BRB!

Ok, I did everything you suggested and more (putting a check on all the boxes in the compatibility tab) and it still happens, However at least now it only happens after I beat a level, instead of ~15 secs in. So at least the problem is as bad now. If anyone has any suggestions, please tell me, I just bought this game about 30mins ago and I've heard a lot of good things about the original 2 games.
Anyways, Thanks!

i found a fix for my game, if you game has nasty pink and missing colors just run and install the game through dosbox. after you open dosbox type the directory for your game (i had to shorten my directory to just c\dosbox\
in dosbox type:"mount x c:\dosbox\
then: x:
then: doom
for most people your directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Ultimate Doom... but that didn't work for me so i created a new folder in the c:\

Actually I found that guide a few days ago and it fixed all but one of my problems. The final remaining problem is that if I switch to another opened program via Alt+Tab (such as Steam or an Internet Browser to look at a walkthrough) and I later go back to Doom, instead of being Fullscreen like it was when I opened it, it is now in a small unresizeable window. It isn't that bad as I can still see and play the game, but I want to be in fullscreen (Or to at least be able to resize the window to make it mostly fullscreen). If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Thanks!

After using the guide SlimeGoop linked me to (although I used the guide about a day or two before he/she posted the link here) my computer gives me an error if I try using the compatiblity options with the game(although I don't really need to use them anymore). But thank you for the suggestion!

I have old Doom version for Windows 95 (without folder called "base").Probably my advice is working only with this version. My apologies for bad advice :(
EngineerMedic 19 JUL 2014 a las 10:55
It's ok. You did nothing wrong. At least it still helped.
Oddworldgirl 23 JUL 2014 a las 9:42
I'm afraid the advice didn't work for me but I have made a wierd discovery. Nothing goes wrong if I have first loaded up Doom 2 (so that a level is loaded) and then start up Doom 1 (with or without exiting Doom 2). I had originally loaded both up to compare the different options, but by doind this the problem seemed to fix itself. I'm not sure why this works and I tried it a few times to make sure I wasn't imagining it. Thanks anyway for the advice though!
Use PrBoom instead
- http://sourceforge.net/projects/dooms-19-winx64/

PrBoom is a Source Port of the original Doom code to multiple platforms, including Windows and Linux. It is the preferred port of id software.

Copy the DOOM*.WAD from the "base" folder to the "PrBoom" folder and rename DOOM1.WAD to DOOM1.REN or DOOM1.WAD.REN or something else to unlock the full Steam version within PrBoom.

I've added an [Open Folder...] to the launcher to make it easier to copy to the destination.
I assume you can already access the "base" folder that Steam installs DOOM to.

It'll run HEAPS better than screwing around with DOSBos for a DOS4GW game.

Um... No. We already fixed our games. We don't need to go running around the Internet just to find an Emulator and a ROM of Ultimate Doom.

P.S. I'm only angry about this right now is because Norton found a virus attached to one of the emulators I have on my computer. (Luckily it said that it has done no damage. I'm still gonna run another scan and delete the emulator just in case.)

The first bit in this guide fixes the colour issues in DosBox. Specifically the line about "output=openglnb"
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=170599499

Also, take a chill pill Eggman.
As always, using a source port as sugested by Tabris will yield better results.

Dr.Eggman, it does not download an emulator it downloads a Source Port called PrBoom and Shareware Doom (so people without Doom can run it).

You can then just copy the *.WAD file over to it from your Steam 'base' folder.

- PrBoom is not an emulator, it is a Source Port which does not have the problems that the Steam release has. It is 100% free and legal to distribute and malware/virus free.

- The Source Code of PrBoom is also available for inspection by the public.

Hi,
I talked Bethesda of the problem that Doom 1,2,3 and quake that have official Linux versions since a long time ago aren't available on steam for Linux. An employee answered me and said he has talked about it to his manager, but I'd better contact Steam also. Ps : Quake 4 also Mac support but not on Steam.
If we want a Linux support for those games that already has one (but not on Steam) everybody should write to Bethesda and Steam support. Here is the Bethesda mail : "ESO English Support" <ESO_Help@helpmail.elderscrollsonline.com>
