Possible to play .wad's?

So I bought Doom over the weekend and am absolutely loving it - first time player!
But after researching the history of the game, I discovered that it was the community that kept it alive with user-made maps in the form of .wad's - so I was wondering if these were still possible with Steam's version?
I'm new to modding so I have no idea if they'll work :S

Yeah, you use the -wad [filename.wad] parameter to parse them in.
This may require tweaking of the DOSBox.conf file(s), so that DOOM is not loaded.
Then you can run DOOM -wad [filename.wad] from the C:\> prompt like back in the old days.

There are also launchers, etc. to play DOOM with 3rd party, community made content.

if i want to run Doom with DoomMetalVol4.wad where exactly i put the parameter? the wad file is located on the same directory of doom

You need to edit the DOSBox .conf files [autoexec] section to add the parameter as it just runs the commands listed there blindly.

I would recommend checking out Doomseeker and Chocolate Doom.

Chocolate Doom is a very faithful Doom port, it will make Doom run at the correct speed (35fps) and Doom will look and play like it did in the 1994. I love DosBox but it's not ideal for games like this.

Doomseeker makes it easy to play online and offline with or without mods and custom maps.

Don't forget to dl the Chocolate Plugin, copy/paste this file in Doomseeker's "engines" folder
