Steam version of Doom never makes it past the bootup phase?

When I start the game, it takes 3-4 minutes to load, then shows a title screen with no menu. When I move the mouse, nothing happens (no cursor even) and when I click the background turns white and freezes up, I exit the game (Alt+F4 doesn't work, so I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del then Alt+Tab to get to task manager) and it says Doom is "not responding" so I click "end task" then the compiler/interpreter box thing pops up then it crashes so I close that and everything is back to normal.

I tried again a few minutes later and it happened again, exactly the same thing only this time it skips the loading on click and jumps straight to the frozen title screen when I left click. My laptop has lots of problems with older games but with this it just gets jammed on the title screen and becomes unresponsive, anyone else having this problem?
