nice game .. but..
I play the demo yesteday and it seems an very good descent / Forsaken clone! The Grafics are awesome and have overall an nice lightning look! I got so far no problems with FPS or any glitches and I play on full max.
The editor seems a wonderfull good tool for the community what i saw but not yet played!
And the end of my play i thought, this is maybe a good game^^ but than i read some threads here and saw that nobody was doing something for the workshop, many have fps problems and it´s seems not very populer here? ...but why

is there something that i missed?
Should i buy it?

(sorry for my bad english i´m not an nativ english speaker)

even when the singleplayer is short the MP (that came with bots player) with some custome maps would rock the shi*

i try to start to make some moba maps to play some nice matches^^

for 8€ i say, buy it! god ***** it´s a good game!

I think people are a bit hesitant because of the concept behind the game. Despite the fact I was interested in it, I didn't buy it for some time because I couldn't wrap my head around the idea that I was some kind of "anti-virus program" working to kill "virii" as they invade a desktop. Seeing it in action, though, has put most of my fears to rest; once you suspend disbelief, the game invites you into a richly imagined and compelling world. The graphics are beautiful and seem like someone smashed together Tron and The Matrix.

maybe the huge amount of indi games compare with some uniqe gameplay mechanics in this generation is the reason why sometimes good games going lost? ...plus... the indi dev´s have not the same tools for PR as an big studio!

Sometimes i hate to see that a COD become so much attention in game magazins or generell gaming journalism plus the main PR running in the background, and what becomes an indi dev? ...nothing, and that´s something i dont like because they deserve so much more ...

yep, the market is flooded with games.
I mean, on one hand this seems great, but on the other hand great games get lost in the shuffle.

Remeber the North American video game crash of 1983
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_video_game_crash_of_1983

there was to many and the quality begann to fall.

Today the image of the videogame developent is a bit different. You see every year or every half year the same shi* in the trible A branche, like assasins creed, cod, fifa, forza, final fantasy, etc... no big changes.. they floded the market with this. Fanboy or young people are buying like sheeples. You have already to much of everything, every genre and palyed already anything!

you dont want to change this.. or lets say, many people want to change this!

No the problem is the combat sucks (weapons, etc), the flight model also sucks. Descent is a 20 year old game, a huge amount of things have been learned in that time that this game ignores completely. It's merely trying to copy (badly) descent.

Descent always had weak single player, and great mutliplayer. Problem is that was 20 years ago. The genre needs to be carefully and intelligently updated but the guys behind retrovirius don't understand descent's and 6DOF's weaknesses.

Descent always had weak single player
What!? I think you might in the minority on that judgement. There's a lot of reverence for the Descent games and they're from a time before many people were playing online. I certainly loved them for their single player, which I will admittedly qualify with: at the time. I'll grant that from a modern perspective, the key hunt, find the reactor, escape the level - rinse and repeat - formula doesn't hold up, but in 1995 it rocked my world.

Retrovirus is no more a copy Descent than how every first person shooter ever is a "copy" of Wolfenstien 3D. It's just that Descent's 6DOF gameplay hasn't been iterated on ad nauseam like more typical "walking" shooters, so when something comes along that has 6DOF, it's seems more like a Descent copy than it would if it were in a genre that was flooded with similar games.

And actually, I think the game would be better if it was trying to be more of a Descent clone. I think they tried to make a more "strategic" game by limiting the cycles so much and making you relatively easy to kill. By doing that I feel like they essentially ended up made the 6DOF equivalent of a cover shooter - and it's a formula that just doesn't work in this case. Spending so much of the game peeking out from tubes or other cover and waiting for cycles to regen just makes a more tedious experience, not really a more strategic one.

I think it's still an ok game, but I would ultimately agree it unfortunately doesn't rise above the big shadow cast by it's precursor. With some balance tweaks and maybe some mechanics adjustments, I think it could have been a more entertaining game, but who can really say.

The "flight" model?

The whole point of Descent is that it essentially suspends real flight mechanics. The idea is that you're in some kind of futuristic vehicle that is able to easily move in all directions. Of course, this is completely unrealistic, but so is strafing in traditional FPS games. And walking without legs. And so on. No offense, but I think complaining about the "flight mechanics" is missing why 6DOF games were fun in the first place. There is no flight mechanics. That's the whole point.

The weapon design is also excellent once you get used to the scanning mechanic. The only complaint I have about the combat is that the enemies move a little too fast to adequately dodge them, although this is fixed to a certain degree by just keeping you finger on the boost button.
