[To the devs] Netricsa's scaling and color vs nostalgia
I'm feeling the nostalgic urge to play through all the classic Serious Sam games, however there is something in Revolution that prevents me from doing so. It's Netricsa. I've always loved reading about my missions, weapons and enemies as the campaign progressed. It really adds to the atmosphere of the game. At least thats how I experienced it as a kid. However the state that Netricsa is currently in prevents me from getting that nostalgic feeling.

  • The most glaring issue is the font size. I always played TFE and TSE at 800x600, even on an LCD in 2005 because the small non scaling font size makes it painful to read on a high res screen. I'm assuming that this will be fixed in future updates.

  • What ruins the nostalgia for me is the color. Netricsa is either green or blue, but not amber/orange. I would really like it if Netricsa's color was editable from a config file, just like the hud. This may seem like a really small insignificant pet peeve, but the main reason people are going to play Revolution over SSHD is nostalgia and in order for that nostalgia to work the game needs to look and feel just like the person playing remembers it. Thats why people hate the HD remakes for removing stuff like Newtons Nightmare. It just doesn't feel right to see something you love and know in a state that is unfamiliar to you.

  • My last point is framerate. For some reason the models in Netricsa are rendered at what feels like 20 fps. Was the original game like that? I don't really remember, but it seems rather odd.

I know that I am not entitled to getting Revolutions made the way I would like, but I would really appreciate it if the developers take my feedback into consideration.

Thanks. :)

20 FPS is a pretty accurate number. I think we updated some rendering code there and forgot to lerp the rotation. Thanks, will fix.

On netricsa, the plan is to eventually completely rewrite the menu system (and thus Netricsa as well), because the existing code for that is very ugly. The rewrite of the menu system was supposed to happen around the time we rewrote the HUD system (for full customization), but I never actually had enough time to get around to it.

I'll see what I can do with the menus (and Netricsa), I have some very cool plans for that that I've already started partial work on a while ago, just need to pick it up again.

Thanks for the long post!

Still working on the menu overhaul? I imagine it's not as simple as increasing the font size and turning on Word Wrap. I think that is the only thing missing from the engine. Everything else seems pretty solid and finished.

Thanks for the bump. I imagine that the issue is that Netricsa uses bitmap fonts with a fixed size.
