March of the Eagles

March of the Eagles

Playing as a Minor Power
In short, you can't play as a minor power.
A more detailed version:
The Netherlands, Tuscany, Italy and Switzerland are all satellites of France, so they can't do anything on their own.
Wallachia, Moldovia, and Egypt are satellites of The Ottoman Empire, so they too can't do anything.
Denmark cannot attack Sweden, the only possible country that they could possibly go to war with, because they'd get beaten harder than eggs.
Portugal is unable to do anything because It's completely blocked by Spain and its ally, France.
Morocco is basically just food for Spain.
Tunisia and Tripolitana, while independent, have absolutely no room to expand, beyond cannibalizing each other.
Sicily gets invaded by France in the first five minutes of the Game and has nowhere to expand.
Piedmont can't expand anywhere, because it's either have to fight Sicily, which quickly becomes France, or Italy or Tuscany, both of which are satellites of France.
You could play as the pope, but good luck conquering anything while surrounded by satellites of France and Sicily, which is stronger.
Bavaria is bordered by the way stronger Austria and Prussia, and the equally strong hesse. It can't take over the HRE territories or Saxony because both are satellites of Austria and Prussia, respectively. And the small German states get their independence guaranteed by a huge country almost immediately, so declaring war on them is suicide.
Everything I just said about Bavaria can be applied to Hesse, with the difference being that Hesse can actually take over Nassau. It has no moves after that.
Mecklenburg, Baden, Wurttemburg, and Nassau are all too small to take on their neighbors.
That is every minor power in the game, and they are all impossible to win with.
I guess this is how it was designed. The game forces these nations to be pawns of bigger powers to reflect the real geopolitical situation at the time.
I still think this is a great game. Just don't try to be the little guy, unless you like being trampled by the big boys as soon as you do anything.

Not only that, but the minor powers don't receive strong man power boosts. Denmark, one of the most powerful out of all the minor nations, only gets around 1,200 every month of manpower which is horrible. They are able to take on Sweden if they only had say around 5000 a month

Dont forget Persia. Between the Ottomans and Russia, whats a Shah to do?

I must disagree. I played as Bavaria, and if you get really quick, declaring war uppon every little german state unprotected, you can get some provinces easily. Hesse, Nassau, Bade or Wurtemberg (I don't remember wich is protected from the very begening by Austria.
You pay some of your prestige to improve relation with Austria and France. And you build up an army, with patience and diplomatic touch, you wait for Prussia to get involved in a conflict with Russia, and then AHAH ! Hit it in the back and get some provinces, repeat. Repeat with Austria. Get some access with great powers too can help. You eventually can win a minor victory if you win enough battles, but it's not easy.
Resume : Attack little states, hit big ones in the back with help.

With Egypt, it's easier. Get Tripolitania fast, then all Africa, then Ottoman. Almost as easy that Ottoman Empire. With the others, yes, impossible. Never played with Denmark.

Considering at the outset of the game Sweden and Denmark have around the same military size something like 50,000-60,000 men I could totally see Denmark beating Sweden if controlled by a human player. And having played as Sweden myself I can say that their manpower at the beginning of the game is absolutely ♥♥♥♥. I want to say it's like between 1200 and 2400 until you take provinces. Not to mention in the beginning the Danish navy will absolutely trounce the Swedes(so long as you avoid war with the british although having never played as Denmark I don't even know if that's possible). Denmark can't win the game but it can definitely eat Sweden.

You can't win with them, but you can still have a bit of fun. I did a Morocco play where the objective was to get back the two spanish enclaves on my territory. It was fun, but it's true that the manpower is so small it's ridiculous.

I disagree. This game have so incredibly bad AI (its worst from all Paradox games) that you can easily beat overwhelming enemy...

I play for Egypt and I beat Ottomans 3x times in row (first war was immediately in januar 1805) without hassle. A just wait for them and I beat them on my land. Human player for Denmark couldnt lose with Sweden. Denmark have bigger navy... and land forces are equal so its not hard.

For Bavaria this is playable too... Others nations are probably unplayable yes. Because they havent manpower. (Persia have some manpower so beating Ottomans is theoretically possible, but survive war with Russia is unlikely...)

This time, I played with Denmark, Morocco and Persia.
With Morocco, getting all North Africa and attacking Ottoman empire is easy, also get some of the italian islands if you are quick and lucky. But win a war against a coalition...

With Denmark, attacking Mecklembourg and Oldenbourg and ripping Sweden apart is possible, if you don't forget to improve your relations with Prussia. After some time, advancing in Prussia near 1815 when Russia or Austria are at war with them.

With Persia, I managed to offer only the province they needed to Russia without fighting and losing men in a pointless war. After what, wining two wars against the Ottoman is easy : they are always at war with Austria or Russia or both. With the won provinces, money and men, plus Egypt, I won two wars against Russia and take back all Ottoman provinces they had, mine, and all Caucasus (Thanks to the coalition wars) before 1818.

To "win" as a little power, you have to be patient and stab some backs.
I really win a minor victory with Bavaria, but that's all.

I've attempted to play as Wallachia before, If the Ottomans make peace with Russia and Persia early enough you can fight them, capture the coast of the black sea, gain independence and then prepare to attack Moldavia and Russia, generally Persia will pay subsidies and Austria will guarantee independence, still hard as crap since Wallachia only starts with two leaders
This is the realistic part of the game. Minor powers should be out of power.

And that is why they are called minor powers.
I played as Denmark and i have all of Sweden exept for a small part of Finland which Russia has. I Also have all the African nations exept for the british sattelite. I have Greece and a big part of Prussia. If you recruit alot of troops before you go to war with Sweden, you have a big chance of winning. Britain will only join the war if you are in Frances Coalition.
I haven't played this game yet, but when your a minor power its not going to be easy. Also European bigboys didn't like upstarts. Its going to be hell, but if you succeed you will feel awesome.
Pretty intresting stuff, just started playing this game and it seems okay.

I wish you could play as a minor nation, that is what I always play as in EU3
Atalung 22 sept. 2013 la 12:19
I disagree on Denmark, I fought a blitzkrieg style war at the very start of the game and was able to steal away several territories as a buffer zone before the Swedish war machine could mobilize.
