[Workaround in thread] Bought it and not happy so far... Import functionality is poor!
Ctrl-I doesn't import. In fact, the program either ignores my attempts to import or crashes (when I restart the program I can open the import screen once until it becomes unresponsive again). The few times in which I have been able to successfully click the "Import" Icon at the top, apparently Capital One's CSV files are unreadable by YNAB. Any help? Thanks!

Hi MajorStir,
I'm sorry you're running into these problems - we have found a problem when importing fails that you can't import again until you restart. This is getting fixed at the moment.

As for CSV files, they are our last resort for importing. If you can use OFX/QFX/QIF instead, the imports work much better (and do duplicate matching etc). If you can't get one of those files, this link explains the CSV files and the format they need to be in: http://www.youneedabudget.com/support/article/csv-file-importing

Cheers

Rodeo, I appreciate your quick response, but having you change your program to read CapitalOne's format is probably easier for me to do than the other way around. :)

The import problem is also irritating and I am happy to hear you are aware of it. Thanks again.

I just had a look at the capitalOne site (I don't have an account there), and it looks like they offer OFX and QFX options for download ( see this pic http://screencast.com/t/AvxjSEz0jk ).
If you can use one of those downloads instead, then you won't need to modify your CSV file!

Rodeo, it'd be so much easier if you'd read my mind, thanks.

I did, but it kinda freaked me out a little, so I decided to cut it out quick-smart! ;)

I'm not able to import anything. If I click import the window pops up (the first time). Click on 'Choose file to import...' doesn't do anything though. I hope it's a quick fix. I was hoping to use this instead of Mint, but I'm worried after spending $45 and I can't even get started.

Hi GrayGranite,
I'm looking into this right now, and I got it working by running YNAB in diagnostics mode.

Go to the Help menu in the upper grey bar just after opening YNAB, prior to opening your budget file. Under Help will be a selection that says Enable/Disable diagnostics. Click on that, and click "Enable". Restart when you're prompted. You'll know you're running in diagnostics mode because it will say "Diagnostics Enabled" in the title bar.

I'm not sure why it's not working, so I'm going to keep looking into it, but this should get you going for now. I switched back out of diagnostics mode after I had done this once, and it continued to allow imports just fine.

The import feature for CapitalOne for other formats other than .csv is only for credit cards. The bank (for my checking account) does not allow for the additional formats.
RodeoClown  [Fejlesztő] 2012. dec. 20. @ de. 10:25
That's frustrating :S
(Working with banks is the most frustrating part of my job - they do stupid stuff all the time).

I'm sorry they don't provide that option. We have talked about doing better CSV importing, but that won't be implemented for a while yet (we've got a few big features that will be going in before we even start looking into it).

If you want to ask around on our official forums, some of the users there may have an idea about the best way to convert it (some of them would probably just tell you to enter the data manually though ;)). They can be found here: http://www.youneedabudget.com/forum/

LOL, Yes having the developers go in and:

1) Create custom Regular expressions for the institutions output
2) Add additional lines of code
3) Debug the new code
4) Compile a new build
5) Test the new build
6) Pushing out the update
| Repeat steps 1- 6 for every institutiion that only exports to CSV |
All so you can read a custom .csv file.

Definetely sounds a lot easier than:
1) importing the csv into excel
2) using excel to export the information into the OFX/QFX/QIF file format
3) importing the newly created file into YNAB.

The only part of CapitalOne that allows me to download in OFX or QFX is their credit card site. I don't really understand why but it appears that the credit card and bank are really two different companies (for example, my credit card CapitalOne knows my actual zip code, but my Bank CapitalOne thinks my zip code is different and won't even let me change it. Go figure!).

I did find that http://csvconverter.gginternational.net/ works great for converting CSV to QIF or OFX files... while it's an annoyance, it works and that's what's important.

I'm glad that converter's working for you!

I'm having issues too. I can't import anything. The screen flashes but does nothing. Once it came to a browse window and I selected the OFX file I downloaded from the bank, but then it just crashes. I hope my daughter isn't having these problems too.

First I get a runtime error. I click ok then the YNAB has stopped working popup appears. I click end or exit and YNAB disappears/shuts down except it doesn't! It's still shown as running in the task manager.

-----------------------------------------

edit: I think now the problem may be on my part. I think, for whatever reason, some runtime files may have gotten knackered. I have one steam game that doesn't start due to a runtime error, and now this problem. We'll get it working :)

Hi Neopolaris,
I'm really sorry the import's not working for you.
I'm on leave at the moment, but this is the first thing I'll be looking into once I start back after New Year.

I've added you as a friend in Steam so I can offer some suggestions for you to try and help you out here. If you want to accept the friend request and hear me out, I'm happy for you to unfriend me once I'm done.

Cheers
