Windowed mode?
Alright, so when ever I press windowed mode, the game starts. But there is a flaw. It's the same thing as my desktop size or however you word that. I cant seem to get it to windowed mode, it just doesnt work. It's like the same thing as starting the game full screen mode. I really need help with this. Thank you.

I've noticed its more like full screen windowed mode, as in it does not bound the mouse to the game with a modifier as in Alt+Tab to release it and minimize. Can try editing your local game data here and see if that frees up enough real estate to get you through until there is a more traditional windowed mode available.

C:\Users\%user%\AppData\Local\dof
file = local_saved_data (open with notepad or notepad++)
your looking for the following values.
<WindowMode type="bool">0</WindowMode> (set to 1 instead of 0)
<ScreenResolutionX type="float">1920</ScreenResolutionX> (change 1920 to valid screen x (horizontal) resolution)
<ScreenResolutionY type="float">1080</ScreenResolutionY> (change 1080 to valid Y (vertical) value)
my screen resolution is 1920x1080 as you can see above, if you need a reference for your resolutions supported goto Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display\Screen Resolution and pick a lower resolution from that drop down and input them into the corresponding x and y values for the games resolution in your local_saved_data. That should trick the game into going into a lower (fullscreen) windowed mode.
You wont have the frame around the game but it should free up some real estate on your screen.

Ah, thanks for that - worked for me!

It did not work for me.

My desktop is usually at 1920 x 1200 (with a 25½-inch monitor).

I edited the value with notepad down to 1600 x 900. Instead, I got a very small "lower (fullscreen)" pseudo-window, stuck in the upper-left corner of my big desktop. I cannot estimate its resolution, but it occupied somewhat less than 10% of my screen, much lower than a 1600 x 900 window (which I successfully use in other games). And even though the game's special cursor appears when I move the mouse in that small "window", clicking there has no effect : I had to exit the game by using the Windows Task Manager. By the way, if I only change the first value (WindowMode type) from 0 to 1 and leave the resolution at 1920 x 1200, I still get the same size of small rectangular window (in the upper-left corner of the monitor's screen).

I might as well stick with the 1920 x 1200 fullscreen mode, which I can easily minimize with the alt-tab command. I cannot minimize the game when I select the windowed mode!? But I would like to have a 1600 x 900 "window" that "should free up some real estate on [my] screen".

I think that is because there is not any dynamic anchoring placeholders for values. Hince why there is only a fullscreen windowed mode. Once there is the windowed mode with the frame there will anchor values to reference the resolution to.

Since it is so, Jester (thanks for your technical reply), why was such a pseudo-windowed mode offered in a patch, a few days after the Steam release ?

When I launch the game from Steam, I initially get the option of playing the game in fullscreen or windowed mode. In my case, on a 25½-inch monitor with a native resolution of 1920 x 1200, the "fullscreen windowed mode" apparently produces nothing different than the fullscreen mode, except in one single respect, which happens to be a disadvantage :

In fullscreen mode, I can easily minimize the game with the alt-tab command and then easily restore it by clicking on its taskbar icon. In the new pseudo-windowed mode, the alt-tab command does not minimize the game. There is perhaps a way to minimize it, but I do not know it.

What a strange "windowed" mode : it leaves me stuck with a full game-screen with which I can do nothing special that would qualify it as being a "window" !

I can't tell the difference between windowed and un-windowed startup.

This will be brought up in the MOD meeting this coming weekend. Until then please be patient. The guys have a list a mile n half long and are burning the candle at both ends to try and make it shorter. We appreciate everyone's patience though. As always i will try to lend a hand to keep people rolling until things are ironed out.

I can, when I start in windowed mode it starts in fullscreen.
When I start in normal mode, it doesn't start period. My monitor goes black and it says 'not supported'.

model and make of your monitor?

I know some will see it as a necro post, but windowed mode still is not working as it should, even a month after the 'MOD meeting' (whatever that was).

Do I need to point out that the game is not flagged as "early access"?
Because the game definitely feels like it's not in a state of release to me.

i have the not wondowed mode issue too...
i havent played the game further than justgetting the graphics setup to play smooth, im still very tired, but from what i seen during the live stream, there is down time in this game, and that means windowed mode is a must if i want to play it for a long period of time.

While it will appear in full-screen it`s actually running in window mode, and you can run applications on top of it.

Still, it's not what we call windowed mode usually.

I mean, we can choose resolutions, but it doesn't seem that we can have a true windowed mode, because I can't put the game alongside with other applications (like putting the game at 1200 width at most).

I really am used to play games with VLC or a browser, and when a game proposes a windowed mode, I expect more than a different behavior on ALT+TAB.
Maybe I'm just expecting too much.

We looked into making window mode be half window instead of a full window - but most players didn`t like that idea - as controlling anything in a tiny window was very problematic. I guess this is just one situation where we can`t please everyone:)
Fel Jun 23, 2013 @ 6:54am
Why don't you instead look into making it a window bound to the dimensions from the configs?

The best would be a resizable one, but that causes a lot of problems usually, but if you use the same dimensions as what you propose for the full screen, then you should not have problems with UI, and it would please most people.

Please remember that PC is a wide range of machines, some have a tiny screen, and some have a really big one (or even multiple). When you see screens of 27", and a resolution of 2560 x 1440, you can see why people might want to have low resolution games (no insult meant here) on a smaller window.
