Will this be a pure sandbox-experience?
Well, as title says.

I read the state-of-the-game sticky and while there's stuff like a mission framework, factions, mining and stuff, it nowhere suggest some kind of, for lack of a better word, story.

Some kind of "overarching campaign", so to speak.

Don't get me wrong, building up a ship, maybe having to work hard to be able to afford it and aiming to build the best chip you can definitely is intriguing.
But somehow, sandboxing is a lot more tempting to me if i know there's some kind of a story to go back on.

I am not talking an epic "cinematic" storyline with twists. A good example of what i mean would be Space Rangers 2...you were in a pretty open 2-D galaxy with some factions, could take on missions, just pirate away, buy new and better ships/equip them, and basically ignore the evil AI's trying to take over the galaxy as the factions would maintain a certain balance. Meaning if you saved one planet from the AI overlords, they would launch an attack somewhere else. On the other hand, if you ignored them taking a planet, the factions would launch a counterattack.

Taking part in the defense/counterattack that ensued was purely optional. But it still gave the game some overarching "plot" in trying to defeat the 3 AI's, each differently, without a great narrative or cutscenes, and a feeling of actually influencing what happens in the galaxy(e.g. by successfully liberating or defending a planet).

Will there be anything of that sort in this game, or will it be a pure sandbox?

There will be no campaign, just pure sandbox. The factions have their own goals and will try to accomplish them, its up to the player to figure out how they want to participate in the universe.

thanks a lot. i doubt it will be motivating enough to me personally then, but best of luck to you!
The ship editor really does look fantastic.

I suggest going to this thread to see what it would be like.

thank you, too. I took a quick look, but even if i went there first, i would probably have asked if it would remain pure sandbox. As said, looks great, but i kind of need a plot of sorts to be motivated beyond a certain point. Fooling around a while is great...but at some point, that lack of purpose would get to me. Getting the biggest, baddest, greatest ship is a lot more meaningful if you are going to need it in some climactic fight. Amassing riches more meaningful if you can use those towards a goal. Know what i mean?

As said, i'm sure the game will be great, i'm just afraid I'm no longer part of the target audience...(no longer in respect to actually greatly enjoying "Elite" and the likes back in the days)
