Real Science Awesomeness
Hey everyone, I don't know how much of a geek this makes me, but I've been following the comet Ison[www.space.com] as it blows through our solar system on its way to a dangerously close pass by the sun before slingshotting back into space for the next billion years. I happened to catch a PBS show on Comet Encounter last night, and the whole time I was thinking..."How cool would it be to have a comet blow up my ship in Kinetic Void?!?"...Then I realized most people would be irate to say the least, if their ships suddenly blew up as a comet passed by.
But, if you have some time to browse the web and are interested in space-stuff, check out Ison, it'll be visible this weekend yet, then is supposed to either pass around or disintegrate into the sun on Thanksgiving.

Shagohod ...IDK? Nov 21, 2013 @ 8:52am
It'd actually be pretty cool to have comets in . That's at least my opinion on it.

Space flight is dangerous, critical navigation and piloting errors should have dire consequences.

Dangers make things more real :P. I say having comets ingame that you actually could get killed by (or tag along with) would be really cool and add more depth into it :).

And thanks for the Ison hint - ill look it up myself now xP

I definitely agree with adding something like comets to add some dangers.

Haha thanks guys! I'm not sure if we'll implement comets at this point in the game, the dangers right now will be the other factions, but I'll see if I can convince the guys that random comet interaction would be cool. Ison was moving some ridiculous speed, the show stated that the comet had been traveling fast enough that it could have gone from New York to Los Angelos in 20 seconds. Currently it's 845,000 miles per hour... I think you'd never see it coming and then your ship would just disintegrate.

Well, then just slow it down, maybe 40 or 50 km/s, so its faster then the most ships, but you still can react. And maybe a proximity alert...

A warning that warns you about a comet 10 seconds before it hits?

Great idea! :)

I dont want to be a buzzkill and i think in a game realism does not really matter , but to be hit by a comet in the vastness of space by a comet would be a freaky nearly no chance accident !
Also , i think space navigation would also rely on visible light so yeah you would see the comet coming sinse its reflected much faster than it travels.
I think it would be nicer to be able to manuever yourself in asteroid field , fight in it and smash yourself into pieces , or to fight in gas clouds and be fried by electronic storms in it!.

Azuru:
Great idea actually, the asteroids actually have collider fields built into them, some would do more damage to your ship than others, but realistically you could totally smash yourself into pieces, and also your enemies. Gas clouds would probably be more likely to occur nearer to a planet's surface, try going through an atmosphere of a planet and watch as your ship goes kaboom :-) That was implemented in our last patch (0.05).

On the topic of gas clouds: Nebulas would be Freakin Awesome in this game. Visually, as well as a "safe spot" from hositle sensors.

On ISON: ison is awesome, I hope it makes it around the sun. supposed to be visable during the day if it does.

or maby later land on it to aquire a new mineral to transform it into a new wepon or a new material for power to the armer
ANTAG Nov 23, 2013 @ 11:42pm
somthing like that maby a core force field so ships can travle threw gravity at incredable speed it dosent turn the crew into jelly

I have followed the development of your game at a good time in the steam, and I liked what I have seen. Recently bought X Rebirth and I was very disappointed with the game. I've always played and enjoyed the Egosoft X games, but this was a disappointment, I think something really lacking in space games that make us really be traveling in space. The idea of comets seems very good and also like to be able to see black holes, wormholes, suns (which are real, you can bypass them), ghost ships.

it would actually take about 10 econds and would go all the way around the earth in about 26 seconds, to the moon which is around 252,300 miles would take about 17-18 minutes to get to mars would take about 36 hours 29 minutes and 6 seconds and mars is roughly 31,000,000 miles away just imagine if we could get a space shuttle to travel that fast we could fly past the sun in 4-5 days and in a month who knows how far we could go in that time, the irony is though that technically we could do it , it would just cost Billions of dollars and the ship would eesetially be made up entirely of engines and fuel, but since there is no gravity in space once you got to a certain speed you could maintain it for an indefinate amount of time though such an endevour would require construction to be done in LEO (Low Earth Orbit). thought that would be of interest to you lol!
