Wasn't this game like $90 a month ago?
Is it worth it now?

Not sure

I loved Galactic Civs I and II.

But that was when it was with Stardock. I've lost my trust in Early Access. Even with the name "Galactic Civ" behind it, I am skeptical. All the good will I have for EA (Early Access) games has been obliterated.

When a game is 50% off and it's not even technically "out" yet, it gives me negative vibes.

The one excuse people use to defefnd EA games is that they say the game "isn't out yet" and is "still in alpha/beta."

Yet this game is now on SALE, at a DISCOUNT, and technically it has "not been released."

So are we to treat this like a bargain bin game that has been out so long its used up its play value, or do we treat it like an unreleased product?

The 50% discount makes me more, not less skeptical about buying it.

The game originally had a Founder's Elite program for $99 that included the game, all future expansions and DLC, and more. That program ended quite a few months ago.

And im so glad i got in on it!! Im loving the game even though its not done yet! Plus with all the extra goodies that are bound to come out later on down the road, im even happier. ;)

I have been playing this series for a very long time. I even remember sitting in Calculus III in University nodding along and pretending to understand the lecture while actually building ranger ships in the corner of my eyes.

So I'm already a fan of the series. But the Early Access thing and the 50% discount has me frightened about buying it.

I just don't understand how a game can be 50% off before it's even out. A special, limited-time sale of what is esentially a pre-order. It's alarming.

This is just a sale on the entire GalCiv franchise.

Do a little research. This is a trend on Steam. As a Steam user I am sure you are very familiar with how sales work on this platform. Compare sale trends of Early Access titles to regular game releases and you'll see that there is basically no difference between Early Access and non-Early Access when it comes to sales events.

Yes, as a fellow consumer I agree that it feels weird when you see an unfinished product massively discounted. But Steam is making that the norm. I like saving money so I won't complain.

I know it's a trend on STEAM. But just being a trend doesn't mean it doesn't feel a little sad when games like Galactic Civ, which are classic gems in my opinion, are getting in on it.

I still remember when I discovered Galactic CIV I and thought it would be complete junk. I picked it up in Target in one of those budget racks where they sell JUST the disc and a tiny little box for like $5. Usually I don't even get around to playing them, but this time I did: andit was amazing.

But back to the point about the 50% off sale.

There are really only 2 things we can accept when it comes to early access.

#1: They don't get to use the excuse they are still in development and we treat them like a released product.

OR (the one everyone goes with)

#2: We accept that this is an unifinished product, and that, TECHNICALLY, the game is not out yet.

Here's the issue.

If the game isn't out yet, then everyone who paid for this game basically preordered it. If that's the case, then every single last customer, without exception, should be given a partial refund to match this new price.

It simply is dishonest to customers.

They paid for a game that isn't even out yet, and now other people are also "preordering" the game, and they are getting it cheaper?

If it's not out yet, then people who buy EA games should be allowed to get refunded if they don't like it, since it's a testable preorder.

In summation, I realize this is becoming commonplace on here, but the fact that other people do it doesn't make me feel a bit upset in Stardock as well.

If someone paid full price for a game, and now the game isn't even out yet and it's already only worth half that value, then that customer got ripped off.

The game was on sale during the Christmas season at 50% off. This is just another short term sale. The price will go back up; so, you can wait and buy it at full price or wait longer for it to go on sale again. Just because you buy it now while it's on sale doesn't mean you have to play it now.

Paro you are very ill informed. I bought the founders edition when this game was release as an alpha version. I DO NOT feel ripped off in the slightest. I have had the privilege and pleasure of being part of the developement of this game helping Stardock find and squash bugs, offering suggestions to help make the game even better than previous versions. There is a loud chorus of testers here who also bought the game when it was in alpha stage and who do not feel they got ripped off.

Here is the deal. I get the full game, all future expansions and all the DLC as perk for buying the Founders edition and taking part in testing the game so someone like you could buy one of the best games in the GC franchise BUG FREE and plays awesomely. I do not have to buy anything else, I get it all at NO extra charge. That to me is a bargin!!! I paid 99.00 for this and no way do I feel like I was ripped off.

Simply put, if you feel this way don't buy the game, but do not speak for me and everyone in your post. Speak only for yourself in regard to feeling like you got ripped off.

This is solely your opinion NOT mine.

You've become so indoctrinated into the BS that you don't even realize what the things you're saying REALLY mean.

Yes, you get ALL the DLC. Also known as the stuff that should probably have been included in the game.

Remember expansion packs? Remember those old boxes we used to pick up in EB games for $30? THOSE were worth it.

DLC is a BS concept created to screw over consumers.

So now you get to buy a game before it's even out (that is now on sale), and get guaranteed access to content that shouldn't have even been withheld for more money that will still probably end up $5 in the next holiday sale.

The entire practice of early access is a sham.

see this is why gaming is so bad these days. you are going on and on about something you obviously dont fully understand or refuse to acknowledge.

its not DLC that should have come with the game. Stardock has said they will support the game with additional content for YEARS to come. thats years btw. when all that content is released, those people who shelled out that 100 bucks gets it all when released and wont have to pay more.

Expansions, DLC, content of any all flavor is free forever for those people. i bought this on sale today, so when all that content that is to come over the next several YEARS drops i have buy it or wait for to go on sale to.

now if you are the kind of person who thinks they should just release a game and then never add to it again (to give you the satisfaction of saying it all was in the original launch) thats completely fine, however most people like to see their favorite games supported and expanded over years while not having to wait for 10 years to get it all.

Paro are you trolling? You seem to ask a question and already have your mind made up about the answer to that question.

I paid the full price before the winter sale. I have played it a lot so far, I really like the fact that the developers here on the forums listen to what we say and make changes based on that. As such the beta community has a direct effect on the outcome of the game.

I normally don't play Early Access Games anymore either, because the vast majority of them seem to never make it to an actual release. This game actually has a team of developers working on it with a release schedual that is being followed. The game is schedualed to be released in about 2 months, it had that schedual for a long time now. Even if it takes another month or two more it is much much better then most other Early Access Games on steam.

I would prefer if Expansion packs or DLC don't exist either, but thats the world we live in now... nothing to do about it...

As for the state of the game, it is playable at the moment, however some of the bigger features are still missing, biggest being the bigger maps, the ability to create your own species, single player story, the AI right now is pretty dumb, and in larger games it has hugh performance issues (am told the next patch will reduce memory usage by half)... However if you don't get it in the deal now I doubth you wil get another 50% off untill the game is out for a month or two...
