GalCiv3 Vs Sid Meier's Civilisation Series
Which came first? I hear people saying GC is a decade old, not sure about Civilisation series. And why hasn't whichever came first sued the other? I suppose the similarities are because they're in the same genre... but the store screenshots and descriptions for GC3 just feel like they have Civ5 written all over them.

Civilization (1) came out a bit before the OS versions of Galactic Civilizations.

I'll admit to immediately thinking of Civ 4 at GalCiv3's title screen.

I love them both, despite any failings they may have. They've given me too much fun over the years.

But I wouldn't equate the two. Civ is a nation builder, while GalCiv is a 4X game. There are similarities, but that's like saying that all RTS games are the same so why haven't the creators sued each other? It's not a viable way to do business.

Did you ever play Civ 4's DLC space game? :P
Dadsky Mar 28, 2014 @ 2:00am
It's not called one, therefore it isn't. It doesn't matter what is in the game if it isn't marketed as such. That's my take, disagree if you wish.

Wikipedia disagrees with ya. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4X

So do people who's job it is is to know the difference. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-09-20-civ-5-designer-returns-with-a-fresh-approach-to-4x

;)

Because the term 4X hadn't really been coined AFAIK, then yes. And devs do define the labels given to their games. It's their right to do so, with the understanding that that is how it will be judged. Otherwise you could argue that any game is crap because it doesn't meet the set of standards for what you think it is. For instance, CoD has guns and is based on military operations. That makes it the worst military simulator game I have ever seen.

Do you see how messed up that would make things?

EDIT: Okay, I'll admit that I was wrong about Civ.

Civilization is one of the first 4X (only few before) but the link with GalCiv is small because it is turn based when GalCiv is real time, and it isn't Space theme when GalCiv is Space theme as many 4X.

I know CoD doesn't have the requisite elements, my point was that it bears similarities. In that case, what is stopping me from judging it from the point of view of a simulator because of those similarities if the creators didn't say what they envisioned the game as? Every reviewer ever would have a different opinion on the game and therefore judge it based on different things.

At the end of the day, this discussion was about whether Civ was a 4X game. I have been proven wrong. I can take that.

Ha Galactic Civilization? Yeah obviously turn based. Looks like I'm not fully awake. :-)

EDIT: It's probably the price shock, it generated a sort of post traumatic state!!

The comparision isn't Civ (release in 1991) vs. Gal Civ (release in 2003). The comparision is Gal Civ vs. MOO. MOO was considered one of the first (or the first) title labeled as 4x back in 1993.

After that, MOO2 in its day was the best 4x out there. What Gal Civ 1 did was fill the gap with the failure of MOO3. Stardock then made Gal Civ 2 and all the expansions that surpassed MOO2 in my opinion.

With this early access, I'm confident that Gal Civ 3 will avoid the MOO3 mistakes and will be even better than Gal Civ 2.

I prefer GalCiv over Civ but both are great.

The problem with Civ is that games keep getting less and less epic and give convoluted victory goals.

Meanwhile GalCiv they actively try and expand the epicness of it.

I've not met many people who remember this, but that is still one of my favorite space strategy games....if it counts as a space strategy.

Thanks everyone, this is providing me with a good insight into both games.

He's lying, Galactic Civilizations is a Turn-based strategy.

Though I'm not sure if you actually believe that or were being sarcastic.
