Age of Wonders 3 for me is the best TBS-game on the market. I admit, I am a fan since AoW1 but the game changed quite a bit since then and still I think it's great!
At the beginning when watching the first trailers I was concerned that the game might lose clarity gameplaywise due to the newer 3D-graphics but I think Triumph Studios did a perfect job - a good balance between looks and gameplay. Even though it's not a Battlefield 4 hyperrealistic graphicstyle I think it's looking fantastic and it fits.
Next I was concerned of the class and race system Triumph introduced with this game. In the older games there weren't classes but tons of races. This time there were only 6 races ( at the beginning. DLCs and expansion bring more races and classes ) and 6 classes. I underestimated the impact of the different classes and races - the mix of each class and race has its own benefits and playstyles. Not only class and race but also specialisations such as Fire Adept, Partisan, Expansionst add a lot of depth to the game. If you think about it there is a lot to explore in the game, a lot to remember when playing as there are loads of little features that sweaten your experience.
At last I was concerned about the new border-system for the cities. In the past titles you could conquer whatever you want and no matter how far away from your cities the sites were you gained income. In this title you only gain income from sites that are in your territory which expands around your cities. This on the other hand adds another important factor: Settlement placement.
When playing the game I don't feel like missing something out of the older titles. - Well, of course I'd be glad about more variations but this is exactly what the developers are working on at the moment. One DLC has been published just half a year after the release of the main title - hand in hand with big free content-patches - and a big expansion including a new race _and_ a new class is already far developed as far as I can tell.
The developers really listen to the community in the AoW3 own forums. They are very active in the forums comparing them to other bigger studios. This is another very big plus for Triumph. I can only recommend this title, the DLC and the upcoming expansion. - Triumph releases weekly dev-blogs on their page to give updates about some of the new features that are being worked on.
