What makes Age of Wonders 3 unique compared to other fantasy 4X, and real core of the game are it's turn based tactical battles, there's some serious crunch to them. There are a lot of supporting mechanics, such as spellcasting, flanking, and varying unit types and abilities, but what it all adds up to are tactical battles where you always have interesting choices to make. The battles are fun to watch unfold even after playing for hundreds of hours.
The game comes with two fairly long single player campaigns, a random map generator, and an editor that allows you to make your own maps, scenerios, and campaigns.
Multiplayer works well, but unfortunately the tactical battles can cause things to grind to a halt. I don't recommend trying to play more than a one on one multiplayer game unless you and your opponent have entire days worth of free time. It's unfortunte since Endless Legend, another fantasy 4x, integrates tactical battles into the strategic layer nicely and supports multiple tactical battles at once, something Age of Wonders 3 can't manage.
AoW3 also has PBEM mode, which I play a lot of. Unforuntately you can't control the player vs player battles in this mode, it's autoresolve only.
Overall this is a great game. I also recommend the two expansion DLC that have been released.
