Does anyone feel like this game was slightly mis-sold?
Everything the devs produced, both in their description on their website and the videos on steam suggested a "life sim", "tamagotchi-like", "virtual pet" when, in reality, this is a choose-your-own adventure with pictures.

Don't get me wrong; the game is alright. It's certainly not the worst game I've played and for a choose your own adventure game, it does okay. However, there are better and far more complex games available completely free through the twine community. Had this been advertised as being exactly what it is, a choose your own adventure, I would have been fine with paying for this.

I'm struggling to find the 'virtual pet' or even the touted 'life sim' aspects of the game and I really feel that this is missing a lot. The game devs have admitted that the visual of your monster should be changing, perhaps based on your decisions (yet to be seen, seeing as this isn't implemented yet), but this alone doesn't turn the game into a life-sim, nor a virtual pet.

One of the devs previously compared the concept to the sims 2 "Without all the effort". I can see where they were coming from, as this game consists entirely of the sections where your sims come home and you're told "Your co-worker is skimming off the top, what do you do?" however, by 'removing the effot' they've also removed much of the game aspects which make it a life-sim or 'virtual pet' style game

A full review will be written once the game is working as it's 'supposed' to and I've finished it, but currently, this feels lacking at best and mis-sold at worst.

I also suspect something is wrong with the adventure system as a whole. Having played through this twice, every time I selected an icon I had previously chosen on a previous playthrough, I got the same adventure. If there are supposed to be 900+ varied choices in this C-Y-O-adventure, I suspect all is not working as intended.

There definitely seems to be stuff missing from the game. I downloaded the screenshots pack at their homepage for the game, and screenshot 8.png definitely shows a sort of virtual pet/life sim type of gameplay. It looks like it would be a lot of fun if that were available to us. And that's why I bought, I've been looking for something like that for some time now. Very disappointed when I discovered that this wasn't in the game. :(

I really like the choose your own adventure part, too, but there's no point if the endings/medals keep disappearing and the monster never changes. Also, there seems to always be the same few adventures, so after 3-4 play-throughs you have pretty much seen it all :(

I really hope this gets fixed in the update. Does anyone know when the patch will be out?

Hi guys. This is a good point. When we were talking to the press about the alpha, the game had a more Tamagotchi-style gameplay. You had to feed your monster, rest it, and make it exercise. So, the gameplay went something like this:

Adventure with snakes.
EAT
SLEEP
EXERCISE
Go hunting rats with Gobclaws.
EAT
SLEEP
EXERCISE
Give directions to spiders.
EAT
SLEEP
EXERCISE
Decide whether to punk Hamrag.
FLIP TABLE!

The parts around the adventures were just not fun, so we made the decision to toss those out and focus on the parts that were fun, which is what we focused on for launch

BUT at the end of the day, we want to make sure that the game is what you were expecting. If you feel you were expecting something else, let's make it right. Drop Valve an and tell them you're not satisfied with the game. We will help you get a refund, because damnit, the game's supposed to be about making people happy.

Oh, and the disappearing medals is a bug that Andy's just fixed on his end. He says we'll be able to push out an update on his end. Sorry about that.

Thanks for the fast reply! It's always refreshing to see developers communicate when there's an issue :)

Oh, ok that explains my confusion. From the screenshots I thought it was still in the game. Too bad that got removed though, it would have been great to maybe have it as an optional mode on playthrough.

Looking forward to the update! Can't wait to see the little blob grow into a full monster! Does the game update automatically or do we have to re-install?

It should update automatically once Steam pushes it through. It'll be later this evening (Eastern time).

D'oh. I'll have to groom that. Thank you for pointing it out.

Okay Dejobaan, at first I was sceptic about buying this game. Your posts just sold it to me. Not only that I like that you tossed out the eat->sleep->exercise grind. Yet promoting refunds if someone is unhappy shows that you really care about your game and your players. I respect that and support this motion with my wallet. A better invest than the EA-Sims-Drama ;-)

Holy cow! So, three of us are sitting in Rohit's living room reading all the comments and tweaking the game, and this really made our day. Thank you. :D

You earned it. Keep up the good work and you will keep getting postive response. We gamers are a thankfull bunch if we are happy ;-)

I won't be seeking a refund. At the end of the day, as I said, I am actually enjoying the game for what it is, but I do feel like the store needs its description updated to highlight that it's essentially a 'choose your own adventure' type game.

You're a quality game studio and I appreciate the work you've done in the past. I felt disappointed in my initial playthrough, purely because the store made it seem like it was one game, when actually it was another. Trimming the fat is important but so is keeping the paying customer informed! =]

In short, I think it would be really great if you could rethink how the game is pitched on the steam store-page. I'm not sure how long the approval process is or, if this is something you can tweak on the fly. I genuinely think it'll help avoid any disappointment for anyone else (hard to be disappointed if you know what you're buying outright!)

Sounds like way more trouble than I care to deal with so enjoy the $9 and hopefully you can use it to make something I like more in the future.

Would be nice to have that tamagochi like gameplay as well... Maybe devs could bring out those options and let the player choose if they want it or not? I know that I would enjoy it more if I had to take care of the monster and be careful so it doesn't die. I probably am not the only one. There's quite a few similar games that I've played that has some sort of combat options... Heck; even mass effect has option to disable fights so you can only go through the story yet alot of people rather choose the harder option.

I would have enjoyed more raising options or at least customization or socialization options for the monster ... something to make it feel more like YOUR monster, as well as unique each time.

Ok, this thread, just sold the game to me.
