!!! How To Improve Infestation: Survivor Stories Performance and More!!!
this thread is all about increasing the game's performance and manually tweaking the game's settings

Disclaimer: I'm not 100% this is allowed so use at your own risk and don't come to me if they ban you for it or if it crashes the game.

in general if your having problems with performance

1. make sure your hardware at leasts meets the minimum hardware requirements for this game

http://store.steampowered.com/app/226700/
Minimum:
OS:Windows Vista/Windows 7 (enhanced for 64-bit OS)
Processor:2.4 GHZ Quad Core or better
Memory:4 GB RAM
Graphics:Nvidia GTX 460/ATI Radeon HD 5850
DirectX®:9.0
Hard Drive:3 GB HD space
Sound:Windows Compatible Sound Card
Other Requirements:Broadband Internet connection

2. that all unnecessary applications and services are stopped (not running).

the last thing u want it scandisk or antivirus scan or defrag happening while u r trying to play this or any other game.

3. make sure you have windows and drivers fully updated

Infestation: Survivor Stories Manual Tweaks
A number of members with Nvidia cards have posted about the game performing poorly. Well here is something for you to try....

Disabling NVIDIA Physx GPU acceleration
http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2700/~/disabling-nvidia-physx-gpu-acceleration
if you have Nvidia video card and your getting poor framerate and have a half decent cpu open the Nvidia Control Panel, expand "3D Settings", then select "Set Physx configuration", set "Select a Physx processor" to "CPU" and press Apply button.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/nvidia/aid_2700_01.jpg

Just keep in mind that if you do the above it will affect performance for all games. So you don't want to change it permanently. If it helps then just create a profile for the game with the above tweak this way it does not effect other games.

Manually changing "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The War Z\local.ini"

Note the file does not normally exist, but you can create it and when the game runs it will use it.

http://forums.infestationmmo.com/index.php?/topic/29586-official-patch-issues-thread-june-19-2013/?p=434248
r_limit_fps 0
/ / Disables the FPS limit completely so goes above 60 FPS

r_multithreading 1
/ / Enables support for multicore CPUs (I have proof below)

r_half_res_particles 1
/ / Half res particles Increase Decrease load but aliasing.

r_split_grass_render 1
/ / Assuming this means it renders grass on a seperate pipeline.
/ / This could reduce bottlenecking pipeline but Increase memory load.

r_optimize_shadow_map 1
/ / Not sure what this does exactly. Shadow maps Improve graphic quality,
/ / This either Increases performance or quality, but I can not see a difference.

r_shadow_blur 0
/ / Refers to shadow soft edges, this disabling Should Provide more fps.
/ / Enabling It Should Provide better quality.

r_hardware_shadow_method 1
/ / No idea if this is or Boolean variable, either way I see no difference.
/ / Someone with a faster computer should try.

r_allow_hw_shadows 1
/ / Increase Hardware shadows shadow quality with only slight performance hit.

r_default_draw_distance 2000
/ / Draw distance - of what I do not know, Increasing this figure does not seem to alter anything.

r_optimize_meshes 1
/ / Meshes are vertices, edges and faces of objects in game.
/ / Again no way of knowing what "optimize" does (probably nothing).
/ / Meshes to have a lot of with the terrain in this game engine.

r_fxaa 1
/ / Fast Approximate Anti Aliasing. This is the most common form of AA used these days.

r_bloom 1
/ / Makes light sources look more "realistic"
/ / Subjective, some people dislike the bloom effects.

r_ssao 1
/ / Enable / disable ambient occlusion.
/ / TO emulates the way light radiates or "bounces" off of surfaces
/ / It makes lighting more realistically apply to things in game
/ / Making Them look like they "fit" in to the scene better.

r_double_depth_ssao 1 / / Doubles the effect of the above

r_ssao_quality 3
/ / Changes the quality - not sure how this effects it

r_grass_anim_speed 1
/ / Slows down the grass movement to a more realistic level,
/ / Not sure what the original setting is but one is slow and 10 is fast.
/ / 1 seems to feel more realistic, but this is subjective.

r_grass_ssao 1
/ / Adds SSAO to grass

r_anisotropy_quality 16
/ / Anisotropy is the process of aligning / "unfuzzing" textures over distances
/ / Default is 1, maximum Could be 4 or 16. This Tends to really help with far
/ / Away textures in game with little performance loss.

r_antialiasing_quality 3
/ / Increases the AA quality Which removes jaggy edges to models -
/ / Default is 1, but improvement seen in 3 will reduce FPS.

r_vsync_enabled 0
/ / Trys to disable vsync - this setting defaults to 1 in the
/ / GameSettings.ini file so not sure it works (I would hope so, I hate vsync).

r_particle_shadows 1
/ / Renders shadows for particles, disabling this should improve framerate. (
/ / Particles refer to things such as explosion effects, smoke, etc.)

r_cw_shadows 1
/ / No idea what the cw stands for, and my computer does not notice a difference.

r_optimized_ssao 1
/ / Optimizes SSAO, again not sure what it does exactly.

r_first_person_fov
/ / Change field of view - LOCKED

r_bpp
/ / Bits per pixel. 16/24/32 are valid values. Not worth changing.

r_ssao_blur_w_normals
/ / Normals is a way to emulate details on surfaces such as bumps and dents.
/ / However, I cant tell if the blur Increases or decreases quality.

r_roads_zdisplace
/ / Rendering at Road distances, may solve roads "disappearing", not sure of optimal value.

r_do_dyn_shadow_blur
/ / Dynamic soft shadows, turning this off should improve performance.

/ / Unsure of the values ??for these, someone with a higher end computer please help.
r_shadows_blur_phys_range
r_shadows_blur_bias
r_shadows_blur_sense
r_shadows_blur_radius

r_active_shadow_slices
/ / Shadow slices Should Decrease video memory usage of shadow maps.
/ / This should improve performance, not sure if there is any quality loss

r_relief_decals
/ / Increases accuracy of decal texture mapping, Thus making decals to apply
/ / Surfaces more accurately (instead of sticking out awkwardly).
/ / Enable to Increase quality, disable for performance.

r_shadowcull
/ / Culling Determines what is "visible" to the player ergo Should it be rendered yet or not.
/ / This should Enabling Increase Increase performance but may pop-in.

r_shadows
/ / Enable or disable shadows, I havent tested if its locked because I like shadows: (

r_decal_normals
/ / More realistic decals, disabling should improve performance.

r_gameplay_blur_strength
/ / Blurs the game. This is the effect used same-When You are in inventory
/ / Or map screen. However the lowest value seems to be working and its still .1
/ / Very blury, plus going into inventory or map removes this effect.
/ / Does not seem to Affect performance.

r_force_aspect
/ / Force an aspect ratio. I have not tested the values ??but I imagine
/ / This will allow you to run a 4:3 resolution on a 16:9 monitor and
/ / Maintain a 16:9 aspect ratio by applying black bars.

/ / Have not tested these, but They seem self explanatory.
r_screen_scale_x
r_screen_scale_y
r_screen_offset_x
r_screen_offset_y

r_ini_read
/ / Allows you to load another ini file.
/ / If you dont know why you would want to do this, this is not for you.

r_simplify_pure_shadows
/ / Not entirely Certain, but It Should Increase performance.

r_instanced_particles
/ / "Template" particles. Allows for a particle to be determined once and used many
/ / Times, Which may reduce the complexity of the particle field but Increase performance.

r_use_shared_animtracks
/ / Guessing this will Improve Performance, but will probably make movement
/ / Of multiple mobs look more static and less realistic.

r_transp_shadows
/ / Transparent shadows, another portion of "soft shadows", disable for performance.

r_transp_shadow_dist
/ / Set distance to render transparent shadows at.
/ / Greater values ??would Improve quality over distance at cost of performance.
/ / Not sure if locked. Someone with high end pc please test.

r_half_depth_particles
/ / Not entirely sure, I imagine its similar to pipeline mitigation such as half res particles
/ / But I have a feeling this is more for debugging than for us to tweak.

r_allow_delayed_queries
/ / I would imagine this would enabling Increase Decrease memory usage but GPU load.

r_optimize_shadow_map
/ / Again, no idea what their "optimize" does. Probably nothing. High end testers please apply.

r_sss
/ / Subsurface scattering. Increases lighting quality, performance decreases.

r_decals
/ / Not sure if Boolean or amount of decals to render high end testers please apply.

r_depth_mode
/ / Likely linked to the DOF variable, but too high end for me to test. Someone please apply.

g_ui_chat_alpha
/ / Seems locked now, Which is unfortunate. I'd like to be able to make the chat screen a little more transparent.

r_max_mesh_lod
/ / Level of detail for meshes. High end testers needed.

r_shadow_light_source_render_dist
/ / Determins how far away the light source is applied to your visible area,
/ / But my computer cant handle much difference. High end testers apply.

r_terra_shadows
/ / Terrain shadows of the hills you want to cast shadows from light sources and the sun?
/ / Likely Improves performance if disabled.

r_mlaa
/ / Morphological AA is a newer type of AA, but the far the performance and quality goes both are subjective.
/ / However, if you have an AMD card, using this over FXAA Should result in better performance / quality.

r_fxaa_shadow_blur
/ / Alias ??shadows, another component of softshadows. Decreases performances, Increases quality.

r_dof
/ / Depth of field, However my computer cant really test this.
/ / High end tweakers need apply.

r_glow
/ / Works along with r_bloom To provide higher quality lighting. Decreases performance.

r_sun_rays
/ / Sun rays, self explanatory. Will Decrease performance but They sure are pretty ...

r_distort
/ / Distortion effects, post processing part of the package. Disable for performance.

r_limit_renderables
/ / Supposed limit of things it will surrender at once,
/ / However just like the render distance, I havent noticed any change.

g_trees
/ / Someone please play with this and see if it will Increase tree quality.

r_local_vmem_size
/ / Could be useful, but I dont have enough allowance in my hardware to test.

r_card_shader_model
/ / Shader model to use, Typically options are 1, 1.1, 2, and 3.
/ / This can Drastically Increase performance if it works, I will test it the priority.

g_async_loading
/ / Crashes game.

r_update_sh_with_sun
/ / Update the shadows the sun moves. Kind of hard to notice what difference it makes,
/ / And I think the performance would be minor since Increase in game time is rather slow.

r_no_managed_textures
/ / Managed textures Increase ram usage. Depending on where your bottleneck is
/ / This may or may not help. Play with it.

r_allow_distance_cull
/ / As I explained before, culling Determines what is visible to the
/ / Player and Therefore Should or should not be rendered
/ / (This is not an exact description of what it does but its the best way I can describe it to you).
/ / This one is a bit of a cointoss, it may or may not Improve Performance. Play with it.

r_internal_width
r_internal_height

// Custom resolution for the internal render.
// Differs from current UI resolution, so text remains readable while passe game much less taxing.
// Very powerful.

I have a decent computer but this game runs very poorly for me, I'm going to try this out soon thanks!

if u have nvidia one thing that you want to try is switching physx from gpu to cpu "Disabling NVIDIA Physx GPU acceleration" that way your gpu is used for the graphics. that should increase your framerate a bit...

also make sure multithreading is enabled in both the game and in the gpu. i haven't owned an nvidia video card in ages but they used to have driver multithreading in the control panel somewhere. look to see if its still there and try enabling it see how it runs and then disabling it and see how it runs.

just keep in mind that cnay changes that u make may result n the game crashing

and if it crashes dont immediately restart it. let it complete crash reporting and ensure its completely exits by checking for it in the task bar before starting it again with different settings. cause u dont want to end up getting banned for having multiple instances running...
The doctor is in Jul 17, 2013 @ 11:19pm
later tomorow when i can i will try some of the settings out. i dont have any problems with performance but i would like to try to see if i can unlock framerate and perhaps improve the graphics...

also would like to see if there is a way to help members who have laptops with limited height display the eula properly.
Griffster95 Jul 18, 2013 @ 2:33am
i've done about half these settings in the local.ini file, I'll come back to tell you if it worked when I download warz again.

Poor advice, switching to CPU enables Physx emulation which in turn will put more computations to the CPU therefore bottlenecking the game.

If the game doesn't use Physx then it will not be used and the GPU will carry on being used as normal. Even if Physx is used it does not eat much into the processing time of the GPU since Physx is hardware based on Nvidia GPUs and thusly instructions are hardware based and are calculated on the fly.

Hence why Borderlands 2 etc can work perfectly on a medium PC with Physx enabled.

the advice is limited to this game. also its a test he can easily change it back. he should try both ways with this game...if it works he should then create a profile for this game that disabled physx on the gpu and puts it on the cpu. which frees up the gpu for the graphics. and puts physx on the cpu which should not b too much of a problem. also works for other games on nvidia.
Indeed Jul 19, 2013 @ 5:05am
You just don't realise that WarZ has no real Physx support, so what is the point of disabling hardware Physx if when put into software mode it will eat up CPU time.

Its a nonsense suggestion.

Physx and CUDA when used in hardware mode does not affect the GPU that much.
The doctor is in Jul 19, 2013 @ 5:09am
nonsense is only after its tested and verified to be nonsense before then who knows. people should try it and see if it helps with their framerate.
Indeed Jul 19, 2013 @ 5:12am
Its nonsense because it is, read up on hardware Physx to see what impact it has on the GPU on a whole, and how much processing time is taken up.

Also forcing Physx onto the CPU and it helped people could be a number of things.

1. They were overclocking their CPU, and with Physx now bottlenecking the CPU it has essentially stopped the CPU from clocking too quick.

2. Problem with the North bridge of the motherboard not transporting data to and from the PCI-e bridge.
Griffster95 Jul 19, 2013 @ 9:57pm
There was an update that came out for warz that was supposed to "fix" the lighting and improve fps, really all it did was make it unplayable. I could run it with 25-30 fps before, but now I run it at about five for ten.

i can't find a local.ini folder?!?!?!?

by default its not there u just have to create it in like notepad.

yeah they are like switching to like a new engine that they did...
