The game was running fine before the update. How is this possible?!
Because its also feeding you the Older-version of the game and the launcher. Hence why after the cache and redownload happens and you start the launcher, you'll be back at an older version of the game that will then re-update. (It's good for Rolling back if maybe an update was corrupted and you want to go back) but other than that....That's the reason for it being a big file size. Not that 'So many files were missing'.
In Steam: Right click on "Warz / properties / local files / verify the integrity of the game cache...
