Why are the Russians the bad guys
Just played through the demo. I thought the the voice acting was OK, and I like the GPS. I don't find pathfinding through a 3D maze particularly fun, and there was no problem on that count.

But why, in this day and age, are the Russians the bad guys? What have the Russians ever done to us, except export their beautiful beautiful women? If this is meant to be some kind of propaganda, Keen Software House are way, way behind the times. The cold war ended in 1990. The Soviet Union collapsed. The US and NATO won.

There is no credible enemy left... except the enemy within. If there was a space future with mining in it (no way are we gonna get there by 2081, BTW), the existence of off-world colonies would sooner or later raise the question of independence from Earth, just like colonies VS colonizers here on Earth.

Instead we get the plot of the Roger Ramjet cartoon – in space, with about as much depth. Hrrh. Descent could do without this rubbish.

I have read Orwell's 1984. Its lessons apply everywhere, not just the Soviet Union. Particularly in countries with a high deegree of freedom, like Germany, Australia or United States, it is no longer possible to rule people through violence, so round-the-clock surveillance and propaganda is necessary to produce the desired mental attitude.

It is very easy to project such shortcomings of modern society onto others. Since you and I have no role in shaping Russian society, any critique we have of it is morally worthless. We have a moral obligation to act locally, about the societies WE live in, where we have at least some way of effecting the system.

I just found Miner 2081's choice of antagonists very trite and inappropiate. It is enough to turn me off this game and look elsewhere.

Chances that there are nations in space called "Germany" "Japan" "Rusia" or "America" are small. As you said,it more likely would be like "Earth" vs "Mars" or something like that. Those Japan and America nations and so on would be there in the beginning, but later they would unite.

Anyway,i have yet to see a game where the Americans are the bad guys.

America doesnt like Russia that much, thats why the americans choose the russians to be the bad guys.

These days America and Russia are 2 sides of the same coin. Plus I think more nations see the US as the bad guys than they do Russia. Yea, maybe their leader is a bit dodgy. But when was the last time a government represented the will of the people in any country?

As a Brit I don't see Russia as the bad guy really and find it a little weird in a game, I've had friends and work colleagues that are Russian and they are generally no different than Americans (well, maybe not quite as loud) :P
