It's considerably less dead than most other Worms games, bar two.

this is the only worms game i have so i wouldnt know about the others but it seems to always be difficult to find a game

Searching online for servers i can only see one at most. What gives?

This version is better than the newer one since it will run on more [older] machines, & it plays pretty much the same as the older versions. There are still people playing, but I think there would be more people playing if it didn't have to go through steam (maybe?).
