Steam patching the game?
So I just bought the Humble Deep Silver bundle a few days ago and was really interested in Sacred 2, so I started the download, and since I have not the fastest internet connection, I had my PC running over night while I was sleeping (hate to do that because my PC is right next to my bed.. :P). Today I just wanted to start up the game for first time, and what happens? Steam starts downloading a 2GB patch.

So I am wondering, this game is out for quite a while and I am pretty sure that there has not been any patch support for some time now, since online servers for the game already got deactivated. Afaik ownership of the publishing rights for Sacred 2 changed in the meantime, and Sacred 2 Gold on Steam got added by the new owner and it should definetly reflect the final product. So why has Steam to download a patch (this big) for the game?

If the base Version of the game is not final for whatever reason (it really should be) why in gods name not download the patch for the game automatically like other games on Steam but instead waitfor the game to be started?

I just can't see much problem in at least having Steam download the patch automatically after install, if not having it download the final version directly.

It's not really that much of a problem, I am just curious. ;)

I didn't see any 2Gb patch when I got the game. Steam just downloaded 13Gb of game files. There is a community patch that I recommend, you can find it in one of the active threads on this board.

As far as I know there is not steam patching for this game. There's no multiplayer support except 3rd party programs. Also if you are running on 720p or vertical resolution of 768 (eg. 1280x768) the in-game texts might be difficult to read. If that's the case you have to swap out some fonts and adjust sizes via (very simple) modding.

Well, it definetly downloaded a 2GB patch, and it did so just when I tried to start the game, that made me curious.

And I read about the community patch, was already thinking that this was the 2GB patch, but then I really doubt Steam would directly integrate a community patch.

Well if you have the community patch the logo looks different. Maybe Steam uploaded a 2Gb PRISM program to monitor you gaming LOL.

Oo ...now you scare me, gotta get my tinfoil head ^^

btw. will check on the logo later, maybe they really integrated the community patch, who knows ^^ (well there surely are people that know, but not sure if they see this thread... anyways, it's not a big issue, just strange ;)

Pfft, tinfoil hats do nothing. It's not a Faraday cage with an entire hemisphere exposed!

Also the community patch is only 200Mb not 2Gb. Either way, if the game plays who cares? This game is HUGE.

The total size of Sacred 2 Gold on Steam is 13.7 GB (14 784 707 939 bytes) if it downloaded 2GB after it had already downloaded the game, it probably missed some files.

It's not up to Steam to add patches for games, only the developers/publishers may do this.

Yeah Zethell, I know the dev's normally provide a patch, since the original dev no longer exist I was wondering where this patch came from ^^

Like the others have said, it's probably not a patch but just missing / corrupted files. The game hasn't really been patched since the release of the gold edition.

So, after playing it a few times, I just started up Steam today and it starts downloading a 2.1GB patch for Sacred 2 Gold again.. and I am absolutely sure I did exit the game normally yesterday, so no ctd/BSOD/power loss or something that could suggest that some gamefiles could have been corrupted and have to be redownloaded.

After all it has been already made clear that there are no patches for this game anymore (and there have been none for a long time now), so only option I can think of is that Steam has messed up my S2G install and now seems to miss something, but when it fixes (patches) the problem it seems to either reproduce or the fix Steam tries does not work in the first place.. :p

Perhaps it is time to make a clean Win install (been around a year.. ^^) and even a clean Steam install (and not just carrying it over on another HD - has been... well... some years... not even sure if i have ever done a fresh Steam install since I joined Steam xD). Athough I remember having deleted Steam files to have it reinstall while keeping my games folders a couple of times.

Still, strange.. ^^
