I had serious crash issues from something similar to a memory leak. After I upgraded to Win 7, the game would crash after an indeterminate amount of time. The only way to fix it was the clear the buffer so to speak. Teleporting or entering a new area did this. The best way to prevent crashes was to play in coop and repeatedly teleport to your friend.

That was my crash issue. It was incessant and prevented me from progressing, and just when the game was really gearing up, too.

Crashes every 30mins for me...

Well damn. That was my experience. Guess I won't be buying the Gold edition then.

I don't have the Steam version but I had crashing problems with the UK retail copy of S2 Gold with Win64 and adding the following switch to the shortcut resolved the crashes for me:
-nocpubinding
To use this you edit the shortcut for s2 and add that to the end of the target, i.e. mine (non steam)is
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Deep Silver\Sacred 2 - Gold\system\sacred2.exe" -nocpubinding

It's definitely worth a try. Glad to see the expansion finally release in the US. There are some fun new builds that you can only do in the expansion, my favorite was a staff shooting ruthless mutilation inquisitor. I had a lot of fun with S2 closed net, just wish the servers will still there

I tried tons of command line switches, and even more manipulations of the game's configuration files. Turning up memory cache settings and all that. More confirmation that the Steam version doesn't have crash issues would be great.

well that would be hard to do cause some of us have no issues where others do. perhaps making sure the physx is up to date, running as admin and compatability mode, otherwise i have no idea as i dont understand how computers work

Can't confirm crashes with the Steam Gold Edition. Win7 64 bit, E8500, ATI 6850. Downloaded it from Steam, installing was without any problems and I didn't have a single crash in almost 12 hours of playtime...

I do have random crashes. They're infrequent enough that I can live with them. My old Deep Silver setup had random crashes as well. This was and is with all the usual command line fixes plus a memory reserve override.

EDIT: Does anybody know how to add the -nocpubinding and -noopenal commands to the Steam version of this game? I can't find the .exe anywhere, and any shortcuts have no properties tab.

Right click the game in your Steam list, go to properties, go to Set Launch Options.

Thanks, @Firespite, that was very concise and helpful.

so does anyone know if this new steam release works with Windows 7? Ive got an old retail version but it crashes after 20 minutes and has the invisible map syndrome so I really don't want to pay out for another copy if it won't work. I even tried changing the compatability of the shortcut to XPSP3 and changed the target to -nocpubinding and nada difference.

In addition to the command line options I also used the 4gb patch utility on the sacred2.exe and s2gs.exe in the system subdirectory of the install folder. This is only for x64 bit systems but allows programs to have up to a 4gb address space and can help with memory issues. The patch can be downloaded from here:

Win 7 64 bit.. install went fine , 20 hours of play with no crashes , game has run flawlessly

I never crash...but if i am online every 30-45 minutes or so there will be a lock up/freeze due to a memory leak...but if you alt tab every so often it will fix it...so i never crash or anything anymore.

I have 130 hours play time currently also.
