Fixed Game Can't Luanch error for my XP sp3 compuer.
I looked in the EventViewer and found "VC80.CRT" can't resolve, listed as a Side By Side error.
Searching online found this be from MS VC's development tools, but I was unwilling to download and trust random DLLs found in dark corners of the net...

Searching for "VC Redistributable 2005 Service Pack 1" will turn a link on MicroSoft.com with "VCRedist_x86+2005SP1.exe". The correct file has 2,707,352 bytes.

Installing that let my Steam Sacred 2 Gold launch!
Hopefully this will help others run S2G.
That pack is uninstallable via the control panel if it does not fix the issue for you.

On my puny old underpowered machine Sacred 2 Gold crashes before running very long, but that is likely a different problem...

Steam should install VC redistributable while setting up the game for the first time, not sure why it screws this up... on Win7 this isn't an issue since it already comes with it. So, yeah make sure to install VC Redistribuable 2005 SP1 if you're on Win XP

I was experiencing this exact same problem with the Unknown Error. Many different solutions were attempted.. resintall game, Steam, redistributables, etc. All were ineffective.

Going off of what chapdude posted about a Side by Side error I did some research online and found a post on a C++ developer forum. It turns out that they were getting a similar error and they resolved it by also installing Visual C++ 2005 SP1 MFC Security update. After installing the MFC Security update the game started up right away.

I'm pretty sure you need the 2005 SP1 installed first before the MFC update. Both can be found on Microsofts website. I hope this helps!

The 3 step fix to this problem is:
1. Disable the Steam Beta (This is the one most people overlook)
2. Run Sacred 2 Gold as an administrator in windows xp compatability, service pack 3
3. Uninstall and re-install PhysX, DirectX, VC( Found in ProgramFiles(x86)/steam/steamapps/common/sacred2gold/redist), and then reboot your PC
