Sacred 2 Gold

You have been warned: Memory problems up ahead...
Just to let future potential player know that this is a buggy game. It as been so ever since release back in late 2008. Now, they managed to fix most of them with patches and I assume this is the latest 2.65.2 version, still, and take it from someone who played this game for hundreds of hours, there is a fundamental problem with the memory manager in this game. IT WILL CRASH FREQUENTLY! In particular if you use PhysX effect, This is a known problem in the community that Sacred 2 is unstable. Thats still a good game though... when it work!

Yeah I can have physx on for about an hour, then I start to lag, then crash!. the work around I use when I see lag, or entering a large town, is to ALT + TAB. Actually, I'd suggest doing that every 1/2 hour or so as crashes can be random.

Well over 135 hours invested and hasn't crashed once.
KablamO Mar 23, 2013 @ 2:33pm
3 hours played so far, runs very well for me and appears to be very stable.

I got memory problem too. Pehaps its because i have only 4Go ram. Sacred 2 can reach easily 1.4 Go in memory. Game become slow & crash often when i try to quit game. I guess Sacred 2 fails to free memory used. With 8Go ram i think you'll never care about memory problems.

Don't know, I have 8 gigs. Never been an issue.

From what I have experienced with Sacred 2, the more memory you got on your GPU the sooner it will crash. System RAM amount is not a factor as far as crashing problems are concerned. The game, like a vast majority of programs, is a 32 bit application which means it cannot use more than roughly 3GB or memory. You will realize that if you watch memory usage as you play, the closer you get to 1.3 ~ 1.4 GB, the closer you get to your next crash. Like "Nidhoggr" said, ALT-TABing every now and then helps because it force the game to release some of it's memory pool... but not all. There are also a console command you can use to "clean the memory cache". But all of these are only temporary. You can get a pretty stable gaming experience if you stick to the same region in game. Moving around a lot or teleporting worsen the problem. Finally, for those inclined in advanced tweaking, there are a few settings you can change in the game config file. The "options.txt" file is located under "[windows disk letter here]:\Users\[user name here]\AppData\Local\Ascaron Entertainment\Sacred 2\". Browse to the section that starts with "if not manager then..." and set all Mem related parameters values to 1. The game should be more stable but you will see a lot of "stuttering" if you have a slow disk system.

Like I said in the first post, I enjoyed this game even though it suffer from frequent crashing. Depending on your GPU and system type (32 or 64 bit) your "mileage may vary" as they say.

Hope this help...

How much memory do you have? I have 8 gigs, still this game has never crashed.
Close to 150 hours, no crash. I didn't tweak anything either.
Everything you mentioned as problematic, I have never seen happen.
By the way, the console was disabled, the commands no longer work.

It does stutter at first but the longer I play, the smoother it gets,
I think it's the shader cache, once it fills the game smoothes out.

Sorry to hear your having so many problems.

Humm... I wonder if you play the same version as I had. I bought this game from Deep Silver/Ascaron in 2009. Later, I also bought the expansion. Can you tell me the version you see on the loading/main menu screen? I have version 2.65.2 build 1837.

When I used to play this game a lot, I had 6 GB in my system. I played on 4 different GPU: Geforce GTX 260 core 216 896MB, Radeon HD 4890 1GB, Radeon HD 5870 1GB and Geforce GTX 570 1280MB. The game was at it's most stable state on the Radeon HD 5870 since I had no PhysX effect on this card. Every settings in game are maxed out except for texture which is set at default. Setting it to "Elite" cause the game to refuse to load... Also, I tried 3 different Windows version, namely, XP 32 bit, XP 64 bit and Win 7 64 bit. Seemed to make very little difference as far as game stability is concerned.

I presume you are using the Steam version. Please, reply back with the version info and GPU you are using. This could help understanding why some like me had problems...

Thanks.

I checked, Sacred 2 start with around 300 Mo ram to reach 1.4 Go after hours of play.

Yes I do have the Steam version: v 2.65.2 build 1837 en-UK CM Patch 0140

My settings are mixed, mostly high. Textures are default, I can run the Elite textures but the game stutters more and doesn't look all that much better.

My PC:
Dell Workstation 690 ( built in 2007)
2 - Xeon processors (dual cores) @ 2.66 Ghz
8 Gigs Ram
Nvidia GTX 550Ti
Windows 7 Pro 64bit
Monitor Res: 1600 x 900

My Settings in game:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=134582611

EDIT:
Finally got Sacred 2 too hang (161 hours in game). Played with Elite textures and after about 2 hours, I went to enter a cave and nothing but blackness, it hung. Had to kill the game.

Like I mentioned before, I usually don't play with the Elite textures. They don't make much of a difference and the game stutters more.

Steam version or Community Patch 1.40 don't solve memory issues. Both lead to game crash when you have only 4Go Ram because Sacred 2 process reach 1.6 Go in memory.

Steam build-bot launch game with admin rights. If someone run Sacred 2 Community Patch without Steam build-bot with admin rights & game work very good tell me please.

Windows XP (32) has far less memory problems, I can play for hours at a time with max settings (Elite textures, PhysX enabled, and OpenAL sound). On Win7/Win8 I can only play for 30-45 mins before memory reaches the critical 1.3GB-1.5GB point. Even with Elite and PhysX off in Win7/Win8 I rarely lasted more than an hour before crash/freeze. In XP it uses less memory and leaks at a slower rate. OpenAL audio is also much more stable (this game is probably the sole reason I have an X-Fi sound card).

It really has nothing to do with how much RAM you have because the game is limited to 1.3GB-1.5GB before it crashes. VRAM means nothing either becuase the game rarely goes over 768MB (due to GeForce 8800GTX's having 768MB back in 2008). The game's memory manager is crap and was desgined for Windows XP (with later hacks for Vista), so there's not much we can do about it...

So if you really want the best Sacred 2 experience, I would suggest dual booting XP-32. (Just make sure to install DirectX, VC Redistributables, .Net framework, and windows updates otherwise the game won't run)

I checked with Ctrl+Alt+Suppr to see memory used by Sacred 2 Gold Community Patch. Can reach 1.7<memory used/1.8 Go It seem i have nVidia drivers problem too. And i'am not sure, perhaps when you create multiplayer -local- party with 2+ players allowed, it can be use more memory than solo party.

I assume you're playing with the graphics turned down, it probably behaves differently that way. with settings maxed it's very prone to crashing past the 1.3GB point.

There's multiple threads on the 1.3GB-1.5GB issues like these:
Sacred 2 freezes when memory use is more than 1.5G ram[darkmatters.org]
Possible workaround for Sacred 2 crash at 1.5GB allocated memory (Windows 7)[forum.sacred2.com]

no real true fixes available from what I've gathered, only XP runs it properly with settings maxed. (even the alt-tab to free up memory doesn't work after awhile because the main process slowly leaks unrecoverable memory)
