This is one of those games where you simply HAVE to play to gain perspective on where we've been as a hobby.
Duke Nukem 3D still holds up today. It's fast paced, Fun, Challenging, and best of all FUN! That's right, fun is on there twice. Good ol' Duke3D is a Doom/ROTT clone that goes it's own way and ends up with something unique.
The humor is very dated. I grew up in the 90's, I get the jokes, but i could easily see someone born in 1999 thinking "Who the fug is OJ Simpson?" Other than that, this is a game from a different time. A time where being offended diddn't entitle you to censorship of everyone around you. A time where you were told to man up and take jokes on the chin. A time where you could go down to the gas station and fill up AND buy a candy bar all for 20 bucks. A time where sinbad had a career. If you don't get that last joke, yeah you're not going to get 70% of the jokes going on here.
The gameplay is still fast paced and tight as a drum. Enemies are bullet sponges however. that's my one gripe. This version comes with Duke 3D, Duke 3D Atomic edition which includes the 4th episode and the expander gun, The Christmas expansion with the balls hard suprise at the end, The carribean vacation expansion with stunningly well designed and creative levels(Really, they're a marvel!) and duke it out in DC, another stunningly creative and well designed expansion. All of these expansions are fantastic, creative, and well designed level-flow wise. Some of them even better than the original game campaign!(Episode 2 is kind of a turd)
I haven't looked extensively into mod support, but it seems this particular version isn't compatable with alot, but i could be wrong. there might be a compatability fix somewhere that i overlooked.
I also haven't looked into the multiplayer. Multiplayer used to be a huge part of Duke3D, so that may be a very important factor i have no business commenting on.
All in all, duke3d is a good yard stick to measure where we're going, where we've been, and where we are. The expansion quality is something you're just not going to find in modern games. They were each unique while being different from the original game, yet still fitting in the same vein. The closest an modern game has gotten was Borderlands 1, General Knoxx DLC. And that's not even close. Duke 3D also sets a precident for fast paced, difficult shooters. You're not going to find that these days with the industry's love affair with realism. Back in the 90's? Screw it! Shoot him with ice and kick him to bits! Make the RPG shoot coconuts! Go bananas!
I most definantly recommend this game. It is firm in it's place in history as a historic milestone game. I think everyone who calls themselves a gaming enthusiast should beat this game.
