Steam Version Even Better than GOG's
Usually I prefer the GOG version of a game over Steam's, but in this case is it apparent that some extra work's gone into this old classic (exclusively on Steam) to turn Duke Nukem 3D into as user friendly an experience as possible. I am especially grateful for the ability to remap keys from within the game. Apply this same technique to other classic Build engine games (Blood and Shadow Warrior come to mind) and I'll buy those, too!

You do know you can remap keys on GOG Duke 3D aswell, I know because I have done.

All i cay say that is when multiplayer is released this version will surpass any and all except for maybe eduke32 if they manage to fix their networking programming first but i have my doubts that they'll manage that.

I specified "the ability to remap keys from within the game," something I don't remember being able to do in GOG's version, which required me running a setup file first (just like during the DOS days).

The GOG version isn't really a new version though, it's just a convenient repackaging for those who are lazy to get a DOS emulator up and running themselves :P

Time is money, and I'd rather spend my free time playing a game than getting it to run on DOSBOX, which for the longest time couldn't run DNE anyway (its website said as much in its FAQ). The GOG version is called the Atomic Edition, whereas this one on Steam is a Megaton Edition, and the differences are enough to warrant this two-time DNE3D owner (on CD-ROM and on GOG) to purchase the game a third time!

Love to see a Shadow Warrior so yea we may see that, but as for Blood that may be a impossiblity. for some damn reason Monolith says they lost the source code to Blood which makes doing stuff like renders it impossible unless someone was able to rebuild it from the ground up which will be really tough to keep the original things that made Blood great. also before Megaton, there was JFDuke which allowed rebinding but it had a bit awakrd things on optimization but Megaton fixes that far more. Most of what GoG does with DOS games is just make it use with Dosbox automatically thats it. not really else done to it except for that but it is polished better for people on Windows 7 and such.

The original Blood was in the Build engine, just like Duke3d and Shadow Warrior. Blood 2, on the other hand, was built on the Monolith engine.

That must have been EONS ago, as according to this -> http://www.dosbox.com/comp_list.php?showID=1744&letter=D DN3D has been fully supported by DOSBox since version 0.63 :wink:

I myself have been playing it on my aging Intel P4 2.666GHz PC since I can't remember when (maybe version 0.72 of DOSBox?).

I last checked around 2004. At the time, a question about Duke Nukem 3d compatibility was one of the most popular ones asked of the DOSBOX staff, and they replied with something to the effect that DN3D had limited success, with low frame rates and no sound being common symptoms. Glad they got it working since then, though I still prefer the ease of the GOG and especially now Steam versions.

I myself have a single extremely 'tweaked' "DOSBox.conf" that runs most ANYTHING fairly well, including DN3D :)

But, I've always wondered what GOG's default config file for DOSBox and DN3D looked like.

Can anyone paste it here (the fresh-install default "DOSBox.conf" from the GOG version)?

It has been "possible" to play Duke3D in DOSBox easily since the 0.63 version for many years (especially since the introduction of "auto" cycles and core which made so many 'how to dosbox game' guides pointless). Even on an average Pentium 4 system. And if you think DOSBox is hard and troublesome to work with... try building a period correct computer to play the game on :)
it's a little strange since yuo could've also had the choice of playing it in source ports like JFDuke3D which has been in existence since 2003.

It's called LithTech. Given Monolith's position for the Windows platform at the time, there could've been a small chance to scrap Build for their own Rage engine (Another sector-based renderer)
