Gamingspeed DUKE Nukem 3D ?! - #SpeedKills
This are unobjective emotions!!!
I only want to know if somebody has the same opinion.

I have not played Duke Nukem 3D for more than a decade however, I have noticed that in the past the game feeling was different!

I was shocked, because I don´t like the game like this any more. And I tested it without running mode.

On my opinion walking is to fast in the game!!! It is only my opinion!!

I tested the speed in E1L1 in the cinema. If you assuming that the room has a length of 14 meters, you can go through it in 3 sec (run = 2sec). This would be a speed of 4,6 m/sec, which is 3 times faster than normal going.(7m/sec = run)

In my personal point of view:

As a consequence the game is to simple. But not only the go and run timing/balance is wrong. Same problem with the movement and reaktion of the Monsters, only in the other way. They are to slow.
In my memories, you could not avoid the monsters so easily.
The fireballs are measured in terms of the movement also much too slow.
There might be a balancing problem in the game build, maybe the current hardware is to strong. I do not no where the problem comes from.

This are problems of the single player, but it has bigger consequences on the DM multiplayer. All player are running and so it is only a extrem chaotically rushing with “bunnyhopsing”. For me an absolute no go!

I will try to explain it with a allegory.
Hunting fish could be a challenge because you decide which pole, bait and position you take.
You throw the bait in a long trained action and you wait until you catch a big or a little fish or a old single shoe.

But playing Duke Nukem 3D DM at the moment is for me like fishing with dynamit. There is fun but it is only petite!!!!

In the past we are playing it with finesse and surprise. For example we used the Holoduke as a trap, standing in a corner with a rocket aimed. Or we put down a pipe bomb waiting for someone who wants to lift it up!!! Today it is absolute unimaginable that you can play it this way!!

Oh my god, it is so sad. Let us play a blues.

Ok, I do not want to kill the fun of others, I only want to Know,
am I alone???

Is there another soul outside, who is sharing my view? A little maybe?

Please tell us and me Your opinion.

Thanks #Notorious for #SpeedKills

Auch die DOS-Box ist nur eine Abbildung eines alten PC´s von 1996. Die Dosbox kann aber auch in der Geschwindigkeit angepasst werden!

Game's speed was not always like this. You know old CPU´s where not so fast like today´s. So it always was an problem for many emulators to simulate the right performance. So it is possible in DOS-BOX to calibrate the CPU Speed.

[cpu]
# core -- CPU Core used in emulation: normal,simple,dynamic,auto.
# auto switches from normal to dynamic if appropriate.
# cycles -- Amount of instructions DOSBox tries to emulate each millisecond.
# Setting this value too high results in sound dropouts and lags.
# You can also let DOSBox guess the correct value by setting it to max.
# The default setting (auto) switches to max if appropriate.
# cycleup -- Amount of cycles to increase/decrease with keycombo.
# cycledown Setting it lower than 100 will be a percentage.

core=auto
cycles=max
cycleup=500
cycledown=20

Damals neue Hardware:

Intel® Pentium® Processor with MMX™ Technology
233 - 166 MHz
Oct-96
ELSA Winner 2000 pro

Sicher hatte ich damals keinen so teueren PC, ich glaub es war eher ein hoch getakteter 486 (~Pentium 60)

Will damit sagen, Game´s speed was not always like this, because i wouldn´t liked this Game so much, wenn´s so gewesen wäre!!!!!!!

Das Feeling stimmt einfach nicht!

The balancing is not good any more.

It must be better in the past, because I loved the game before and I would not remind me if it was like today!

I can't understand a word here. But if you have problems with dosbox, your computer is likely too good for it. My build with a titan in it simply can't use dosbox no matter what settings are used because the game plays in super speed, like its on crack.

I think the walking speed of Duke is like sprinting in reality. If you look how fast you can go through a room.This makes it too easy to play in single player, because you can ran away if any danger will come. Even the fireballs of the monsters are slower than Duke.
But in multiplayer it is worse, it is extreme chaotic, there is now time for tactic or finesse.

I think the balancing of the speed is not right. I did not know how to change but I think it is a problem of the Build engine.

This is how duke have always been. It's a fast paced game, not a warfare game focusing on reality. Modifying any game mechanics will not only piss veterans/hardcore off, but will also ruin the game in competitive modes like FFA and duels, because dodging projectiles is part of the game and also what makes this game different than the "modern" and realistic ones.

Have you played the game on a old computer?

Maybe because the classic mode is the actual DOS release?

Yes I did, an even weaker than the one you are suggesting and the walking/running speed is still the same.

133 MHz with 16MB RAM

I´m not sure if you are saying the truth, because you did not answer my question for so long! Why are you steam level 0? I think you are not old enough for playing 1996?
ovd_masterkey 20 JUL 2014 a las 17:00
I think, it is not the same to play with a dos-box or playing with real DOS on a first pentium pc with a old graka in 1996, even you are using the same exe!
