The game does actually contain some instances of cruelty and violence.
The puzzles are very simple and should be daoble - if anything controlling both brothers at the same time could be difficult if your kid has zero experience with games.
Spoilers ahead
You rip out a giant spiders legs one by one, you enter a valley which was the scene of a recent battle between humanoid looking giants whos blood colour the rivers red and you actually have to cut their limbs of or manipulate them to get past some sections.
The Ending
The ENDING deals with the death of one of the brothers
Most of the things, including the violence might go over a childs head entirely, similar to humor in cartoons like spongebob or other old nickeloden shows that actually are full of nasty adult humor. You know your child best, maybe this helps with the decision :)
As a sidenote, an xbox controller is strongly suggested. Ther are cases where people could not play the game with a keyboard or had big trouble enjoying the game without one.
Now I just have to look for something else... out of thousands on Steam.
Trine 1 and 2 are absolutely fantastic platformers with some physics puzzles and a fantastic (i cant stress it enough) fantasy setting. It is narrated like someone is reading a book to you. Some puzzles require some more complex problem solving skills though. The first game has local coop for 3 players, the second even has online coop. It might be great for the both of you.
The cave might be worth a look but i havent played it enough to give you more usefull info.
Rayman origins and Legends are both fantastic platformers aswell.
Sonic generations is an amazing sonic game combining the old sidescroller and the new thrid person gameplay. I love it.
Renegade Ops is an action car game where you blow alot of stuff to bits. The cheese story is totally in line with anything they show in more actiony cartoons. Controls might take a little getting used to for the same reason as Brothers's.
Last but not least you might want to take a look at the Overlord 1 and 2. Once again it has a fairytale like fantasy setting full of humor that works for kids and adults alike. It is a mishmash of third person melee combat, mild rpg elements with character developement and some strategy using your minions correctly both in combat and to solve puzzles.

When I asked him what he likes, he said and I quote: "Any game as long as it's not violent or always online, may be adventure and not very very very very very very puzzling". Lol, well, that's specific!
I got him Octodad and he enjoyed it a lot, giggling all the way through :) But it got frustrating for him after a while. Then Castle Crashers (he turned off blood himself) and we both enjoyed it. I think Castle Crashes is still his all-time favourite. I got him Battle Block Theater from the same studio, but it gets very hard half-way through, so he stopped playing it.
So I was thinking about either Broken Age, Brothers, Big And Small, Rayman, and now Trine, Overlord or the rest of the games you have just mentioned.
I think octodad can get frustrating in general for everyone, its just that adults tend to find more fun in it as they understand more that you are not in to win. Octodad seems like a mess of stupid fun to be had with a bunch of friends :D
A little addition to Renegade ops. Footsoldiers are part of the enemies here and there to, so you run them over or shot them which goes with some medium gore. It does not define the game, but its there.
I could imagine that broken age might require a level of patience that not all kids can bring to it. Hearing that he likes castle crashers alot (i just looked up a video - never played it) he seems to enjoy fast paced action brawlers.
Dust: An elysian tale seems interesting
Guacamelee is somewhat a name in the genre but is maybe not straight forward enough
Shank 1 and 2 look great but these have strong violence so thats out of the picture i guess

The game is basically a puzzle game (though the puzzles are may not be that difficult) where you tranverse admittely stunning enviroments as you navigate this strange world. Now, there is no violence, no blood, no gore, and no swearing. Just a very relaxing puzzle-adventure game. Judging from your son said, I think he might like it. (It also provides a wonderful oppurtunity for you son to learrn a bit about the Space Race as well).
Ico has a similar vibe and that sense of cautiously exploring a big environment, but one of the two characters is an NPC whose behavior is part of the challenge. There are some frightening parts that involve spirits repeatedly trying to pull her into an evil portal. Otherwise, no violence that I can recall.
Word of warning, if you get it in a bundle with Shadow of the Colossus, that one's pretty violent and kind of upsetting, although there's no actual blood from what I remember.
